Annie's POV
The sweat was running down the side of my face as I gripped the hammer in my shaking hands.
Luke turned to me, telling me to stay where I was. He rose himself slightly, making his way to another shelf to hide behind, as I could hear the footsteps of the men echoing closer to us.
I pushed myself tighter up against the wall, praying that the shelf gave me enough cover. I heard the footsteps echoing closer, bouncing off the walls of the concrete store room. A tear fell down my face, as I saw a man step into view, and I held my breath, and looked up at Luke. He motioned for me to move backwards, so that I was more out of view.
Raising myself onto the balls of my feet, I stepped backwards, but knocked into the shelf, which caused a tin of food to fall and clatter in the silent room.
The man's head snapped round and locked eyes with me.
"Hello there, darling." He said, coming towards me.
"Shit," I breathed out, standing up as he advanced towards me. He stopped and was then pulled backwards and I saw Luke, start to fight with the man. I stepped out from behind the shelving and saw the man's partner narrow his eyes at me, running at me.
He grabbed me by my throat, slamming me into the wall, which knocked the breath from my lungs. I kept a tight grip on the hammer, knowing if I dropped it it would be game over. He placed his hand around my throat, squeezing tightly, as he pulled his knife from his pocket.
My eyes started to blur due the lack of oxygen, and I heard him start to tut.
"Think I'll just kill you this way, seems less messy." He said close to my ear, and I tried to keep my breathing to a minimum and was trying my best not to panic, and lose more air. I could hear Luke still fighting with the other man and I knew surprise was going to be my best option.
I did a few convincing struggles to try and get out of the man's hold, and then relaxed my body (still holding the hammer, a little bit looser) and rolled my eyes back in my head, closing them.
He held me in the position for a few seconds, before I felt his hair tickle my face, and knew he was listening for my breathing.
I gripped the hammer, swinging it upwards and striking him in the face.
He yelled in pain, stumbling away from me, holding his nose which I'm sure was broken. He spat out a mouthful of blood, and I saw him reach into his pocket, but I didn't give him a chance. I yelled, running forward, swinging the hammer again, this time landing a blow to the side of his head.
He fell, straight onto the floor, and stayed there.
I knew from the blood trail that was starting to fall out of his ear that he was dead. I felt the bile rise in my throat, and that was quickly stopped when I heard a loud gunshot.
I spun round to see Luke standing over the man's body, the smoke still coming out of the barrel of the gun.
His eyes met mine, and he suddenly snapped back into reality, running over to me, and giving me a hug. Apart from in the woods, this was the only emotional responses that Luke had given me, and I rested my forehead on his shoulder, squeezing him tightly. I felt myself looking to the man I had just killed, and Luke pushed my face away from it.
"Don't look." He whispered, and he pulled back. He opened the barrel of his gun, looking inside and muttered a string of curse words.
"What?" I said, and he shook his head.
"No bullets left." He said and I took in a sharp intake of breath.
"Well, there's only Alex left..." I said, and Luke nodded, taking the hammer out of my hand.
