It was here. The night of the lower schools musical, Spartacus. My sister Paige had managed to land a tiny role in it, she got to sing the songs but didn't have any proper lines. That's why mum let me go to the play, not because Jake was going to watch Ben. "You spend too much time with Jake now!" She had said. Sod off.

The problem was, the play was going to be ruined. I had seen some of the rehearsals because I had been picking Paige up from them, and everything was going really well. Except Ben was getting last minute nerves. All week he had been practising so hard, but now he didn't know if he even wanted to be in the play or not. The school was ready to replace him with Malachi (again) but it wouldn't be quite the same, as Malachi would be holding the script on stage.

"Mum! Here is your ticket for the play," said Paige after we got home.

"Oh, right. Thank you," mum replied, only glancing at us as we enter the living room.

"You are coming, aren't you mum?"

"Uhm.. well, you know I'm really busy lately-,"

"Mum you've been busy for the past 6 years, you have to go to the play," I said.

Mum sighed. Honestly, sometimes I wondered if she was even a good parent.

Paige placed the ticket beside mums laptop and scurried off to her room.

I sat down. "Mum, you do realise how important this is to Paige, right? She may not act like it, because she doesn't want to be disappointed but she really does want you to go to the play. She hasn't been in one before, the only performances she's ever done was with her ballet class, and you hardly ever went to those,"

"I know, I'm sorry Chelsea. I will go, I promise,"

"Don't say it to me, say it to Paige," I said and got up. I left the house and went to Emily's.

"So.. your mum's just not gonna go tonight?" Emily asked.

"I'm not sure.. I know she's been really distant since dad left- or she got rid of him- but she's been acting a lot more distant these past few months,"

"Maybe it's time for her to you know, to get a new boyfriend? Or at least some friends. I can ask my mum to throw a party or something and invite your mum. They used to do that every Friday when we were in primary,"

I smiled at the memories. Rebecca would be there too, and they would just invite all of their friends and they'd have a great time. All of us kids would be in another room playing party games too. That was the last time I can say my mother was truly happy. "I think that's a brilliant idea," I said, still smiling.

For a few hours we did all the things we used to do when we were little, because we were in the mood for it. We played hide and seek, watched old Disney channel shows that we had on dvd and sat in the back garden drinking Fanta. It was nice to travel back to a simpler time, when we weren't under pressure to be the best, didn't have to worry about the 'real world', and didn't have teenager problems. I miss those days.

Just before leaving, I texted Jake to say I was on my way. I still didn't know if mum was coming to the play or not, so Jake had said he'd save a seat next to him in case.

When I got back to school, the Brockmans were already there. I went over to them, but looked around for my mother on the way there.

"Oh hi Chelsea," Sue greeted me. "Is Kimberly not coming?"

"Um, I don't think so,"

"From what you've said lately, she sounds a lot like Angela," Pete mumbled.

I slipped in next to Jake. Then Pete said that apparently Ben had chickened out again. When I thought about it, Ben was really upset a few months ago ago when somebody else was going to be Spartacus, and now he didn't want want to be Spartacus.

Jake gave his parents an envelope. Inside was a check that Angela wanted them to spend on Frank.

Eventually, the lights went out and Mr Farthingwell said his speech thing. Karen came back towards the end.

"I told him Stacey would be terribly disappointed if he didn't do it," she said.

"Oh shes not coming now," Pete said.

"Yeah but he doesn't have to know that does he?" she replied with a smirk.
