Chapter 17- Meanwhile

Cody and Rex had arrived on Kamino, the weather was harsh and unrelenting, giving the brothers a sense of serenity. Once greeted by Shaak Ti, Jedi master, and Lama Su, one of the lead scientists native to the planet, they ventured towards their shared quarters. Neither man was really prepared to meet the recruits, so they had agreed prior to spend the first few hours before tea reading up on them. Two squads caught their eyes, Helio and Domino. They seemed diametrically opposed, yet to Cody and Rex respectively, they were just what they were looking for. Perhaps that was a reflection on their own relationship, but the brethren knew that regardless of difference in behaviours, they were a team.

Two hours later, just as the high ranking officers were headed to the mess hall, Cody received a com from general Kenobi. It was rather surprising seeing as he was on leave, but he answered regardless. Furthering his suprise, it was actually Rex's general, Skywalker, on the other end of the line. This caused him to pull his vod back so they were both visible.

"General Skywalker? Is everything alright, this is general Kenobi's frequency."

Skywalker smiled, he knew Cody would be curious as to what was going on, he talked to both of them without formalities,

"Well, you see men, I'm on Mandalore with Padmé, Obi-Wan and Satine. Oh! And someone else as well."

It was then Rex's turn to speak,
"General, who else would be with you, I know commander Tano is at the temple, we talked on the way here, so yeah... Um..." He trailed off slightly, blushing a bit, something that didn't go unnoticed by Cody.

"A lovely young lady by the name of Sabine Kenobi-Kryze. The duchess gave birth a few hours ago, once you're done on Kamino, you both have our permission as you COs to come visit her. Anyway, I've got to go, Mé's shouting for me, yeah, bye boys!"

And with that the call ended, leaving the clones in the hallway stunned. After a moment of silence, it was actually Cody who broke the silence, laughing at Anakin's behaviour.

"I'm glad the generals doing better," Rex said, after a fit of laughter himself, his face then sobered slightly, "did Kenobi tell you what happened with him?"

"No vod, did something bad happen?"
Although Skywalker wasn't his general, Cody still cared.

"Oh, sorry, it's not my place to say you know." Rex replied, he was sure Cody could figure it out, but he wouldn't give out details that weren't his.

Arriving in the mess hall, Rex spotted Domino squad; they were bickering, which, according to their file, was very common. Individually, all the cadets had very high scores, but together they were abysmal. Perhaps he could give them the kick up the bum they needed to work as a team. Listening into the arguement, if it could even be called that, he heard one of the troopers repeating his statement.

"- how can we go through a test if someone doesn't relay orders though? It's protocol!"

"Oh there goes echo, always repeating things. Did your tank get damaged mate?"

"Dude, we're from the same batch, if it was, it kriffed you over too."

That clone had a five tattooed on his face, Rex assumed that it was CT-5555, or Fives as he was known. He thought the trooper (cadet) was rather amusing, though his language left something to be desired. Deciding to leave them be, he went to sit with Cody, who was observing the Helio squad.

"Hey vod, what are they like?" Cody asked, gesturing towards the table that held Domino and Bravo squads.

"I know I should go for Bravo based off of skill, but I don't know, there's something about that group, especially echo and fives, I like them. Anyway, what about the ones you've been looking at?"

Cody laughed, thinking back on his and Rex's time together on Kamino, smiling, he answered.
"Quite like us you know, two of them, Locke and Smith, basically you and me. Machete, he's, a character... Very loud, too loud for me, but I think if their group does well, the rest can keep him reigned in. Veer, he's quiet, but observant -"

"Like you."

"- Shut up Rex, I still outrank you, anyway. He seems to know everything about everyone. Finally there's Apex, he's basically their leader, seems like he's the middle ground between Locke and Machete. If they pass their final exam, I'm gonna take them all for the 212th."

Cody finished his summary with a small smile on his face. Rex laughed, his brother hadn't even talked to the team and he'd gotten all that? Rex would expect nothing less.

Three more days, exam, a droid raid, and another exam, and the two squads were ready for deployment. Domino was sent to one of the Rishi Moons, Helio was given work on the Negotiator. Rex and Cody hopped on a separate ship, it was small, but it would do. Setting the coordinates for Mandalore, they ventured into hyperspace.

It was a few hours later when they arrived, they'd taken off their armour, wearing their civvies - it was the closest thing they had to formal wear. Waiting on the landing platform was Anakin and Padmé, along with a few guards.

"Rex! My man! And Cody! Co-co-co-coooodyyyy! Welcome to hell." Anakin shouted, Padmé simply groaning, she then explained his behaviour.

"I'm sorry about Ani, he dropped the crib on his foot, he's high on pain meds. Anyway, please, Obi-Wan and the duchess are waiting inside. I'm going to take him back to our room. I'll show you the way."

Anakin, being gently dragged along by his love turned to his captain and whisper-shouted,
"We're gonna kriii-"

Padmé smacked his arm, and he pouted.

"Sorry Mé, sorry men..."

The clones were barely containing their amusement, finally, the group arrived at the corridor where the Jedi and their lovers stayed. Padmé pointed to the door at the end, whilst she pulled her fiance into one off to the right.

"Have fun boys!" She called to them before closing the door to their room.

The clones knocked gently, and we're welcomed in by a tired but joyful Obi-Wan Kenobi.

"Ah, Rex, Cody, I'm so glad you're here! I hope Anakin wasn't too much trouble. Please, please, come meet my daughter, Sabine." The Jedi revealed his wife, holding a tiny girl, a small bundle of auburn hair and bright blue eyes turned in curiosity, and the soldiers strong exterior melted away.

"General."

"Yes Cody?"

"If anything happens to her I would kill everyone in the room and then myself. She is beautiful... Sir."

"That sentiment goes for the both of us General Kenobi."

"Thank you men, sincerely, now, do get some food, I'm sure you haven't had proper meals in a long time. Ask the chefs for anything you want. I'm going to go sleep, I'll see you this evening for dinner, bye!" The general shuffled them out the room, and flopped rather gracelessly next to his dearest, snoring quietly.
