Saving the Monster

Chapter 42

"You bastard!" Rose screamed, rushing past Finn, Poe grabbing her arm just before she reached the man.

He was dressed in a senior First Order uniform, his red hair slicked neatly to his head, his face drawn into a scowl.

Poe stepped forwards, blaster aimed at the mans chest, "You better start talking, real fast".

Rey watched him swallow hard before speaking, his voice trembling slightly as he did, "I'm the spy in the First Order, I'm the one that provided you with the plans, the information.....". He trailed off as Poe rushed at him then, the blaster coming up under the mans chin, Poes face stopping inches away from his,

"And then you double crossed us, it was a trap, you..." Poe started, but the man interrupted, his pale skin flushed,

"It was not..." the man stuttered, pausing as Poe pressed the cold metal harder against his throat,

"Oh come on, you don't seriously expect us to believe that you had nothing to do with the massacre on our troops?" Poe said, shoving the barrel of the blaster against his Adam's apple, making him choke.

The man spluttered a few times, his face becoming even redder, "I've risked my life coming here to talk to you people, why would I do that?"

Finn came to stand next to Poe, his face cold, "Hux I remember you well, you're a slimy womp rat, a selfish, arrogant man. I can't make myself believe that you're in this for the greater good?"

Hux sighed deeply, "Look, I just want Kylo Ren dead, that's all, he took the throne, my rightful place"

"But we could have wiped out half of your troops, your ships...." Rose said.

Hux shrugged, "It was all replaceable, I have contacts"

Poe and Finn looked at each other and slowly Poe lowered his blaster, "So if it wasn't you that told the First Order that we were coming, then who the hell was it?"

"I don't know, that's why I'm here!  I want them dead, you want them dead.  They ruined both of our plans" Hux said irritatedly, stamping his foot.

Rey swallowed hard as she watched Poes eyes narrow and he turned suddenly to face Kano, "You and your people are new. I trust everyone around me, but not you lot"

Kanos face darkened, "My people died for you out there, people still left here lost someone and you're accusing us of double crossing you? What the hell could we have hoped to gain from that?"

Poe walked until he was chest to chest with Kano, both men standing their ground, "I don't know, maybe you wanted to wipe us out so you could have our base, our supplies, maybe you thought the loss of life was worth taking"

Kano shoved Poe then and Poe shoved back, Zorri rushed between them and pushed on Poes chest, "You are being a jerk! Kano is right, they lost people. I know Kano and there is no way he would sacrifice lives for glory. Poe you've got this wrong, you need to apologise"

Rey was breathing hard, watching the terrible discord that she had created. She wanted to run away, to hide, to never be found out.

Very slowly Rey became aware of eyes on her face and she turned.  Hux was staring at her, a strange smile on his face, "Quiet! I might just have an idea who our traitor is"
