Chapter Sixty One
A/N Thanks for all the comments, I can just feel the Sonny hatred brewing and he's a long way from redeeming himself. He's a complex character...well anyway, he is who he is. Hope you enjoy this chapter, and a Happy New Year to you all. MZ xx
Martha ended up spending most of the day with Paul and the kids. It was late afternoon when she got back to the house. Sonny was sat in the kitchen pouring over what was presumably the racing pages of the newspaper; her father was making them both coffee.
“Well isn’t this cosy,” she muttered loud enough that Sonny heard and looked up with a scowl. At the same moment Ethan spotted him and squealed.
“You’re back!”
Sonny’s scowl immediately disappeared as the boy threw himself into his arms. Hugging him tightly he was watching her as she moved into the room, removing her coat and shoes.
“You want a coffee?” her father asked from the other side of the room.
“No thanks, I’ve had enough trying to fight off the cold in the park.” She wanted to be civil in front of Ethan.
“We need to talk Martha.”
Smiling at her father she shook her head, “we’re going to the cinema in half an hour, don’t worry I’ll be back in time for work. It won’t impose on your time, promise.” Her words were heavily laced with sarcasm.
“We’re going in tonight, you can have the night off,” her father offered with a smile.
“YOU?” She shook her head, “you’re going to work?” Looking between the two of them she was incredulous, “right. I see.” You can work when it suits YOU just not when it suits ME. She didn’t say the words as she was struggling to control her temper and she wasn’t about to do this in front of Ethan.
Walking out of the room she felt as though her heart was breaking all over again.
She was sat in her bedroom, straightening her wayward hair in the mirror, hating that she was so close to tears again, wanting to do anything but go to the cinema when there was a tap at the door. She had to think of Ethan, he was desperate to see the latest PIXAR movie, and she had promised him popcorn and sweets too. As Martha turned it opened and she saw Sonny stood there looking angry.
“Give him a break. He’s trying his best.”
She gave a sarcastic laugh at that, turning back to the task in hand she hoped that would brush him off, but as the door closed, she could see him in the mirror walking towards her.
“What are you not going to be reasonable? That’s not you Martha.”
She sighed, “reasonable? Give my father a break? What gives you the right to ask that of me?”
He lowered himself to sit on the bed and looked at her and she almost exploded with fury.
“Are you going to sit there while I get changed?”
Sonny shrugged, “if I have to. I don’t understand why you’re being like this.”
Throwing down her hair brush she turned around and glared at him, “like what? Three weeks ago things were going well, but you, him.” She shook her head trying to clear her thoughts. “You and my father are in cahoots, secret whispers, meetings, job offers. I have given EVERYTHING to keep things going, to keep him afloat, and I find otu what’s happening after overhearing things, talk about getting dumped on, literally.” She sighed, “you have no idea of the things I want to say to you and him, no idea at all.”
