27 years after…

Mayumi’s POV

From: Red <3

Yumi, I need to talk to you immediately .

It’s very important.

Helipad now.

I’ll wait for you there.

        I immediately rushed to the elevator of our building and went to the very top. Hingal na hingal ako nang makarating sa helipad. I knew something was up because hindi naman ganun kung magtext sakin si Red. He was always sweet, yet he called me just by my name. Walang endearment. So I’m thinking that something is really up.

             Halos isang taon na rin kaming mag-on. Siya ang President/CEO at at siyang nagpapatakbo nang kanilang real estate business na pagmamay-ari nang kanilang pamilya, ang Saavedra Landholdings Incorporated. 20 years na rin in business ang SLI at ito ngayon ang nangungunang real estate company sa buong bansa. May mga konting shares din sila with some big real estate companies in various countries such as Malaysia, Dubai, and even in the United States to name a few.

                Wala namang tao sa helipad nang dumating ako. Baka papunta pa lang si Red. Masyado kasi akong nagmadali nung matanggap ko ang message niya. While I was looking at the view off this 50-story building, naalala ko yung kwento nang papa ko sakin.

                We lost everything when a huge controversy hit our family. He did not explain it in detail. Ang alam ko lang is that nawala ang lahat sa isang iglap. Dahil daw sa controbersiyang iyon, isa-isang nagsialisan ang kaniyang mga partners and investors. He had to give the company up because we were in the verge of bankruptcy. We were very, very rich according to my older siblings, pero hindi ko na naransan yun. Nabuhay na lang kami nang simple, pero masaya pa rin naman.

        I am Mayumi Bernadeth Enriquez, 23. I work as Marketing Staff for SLI. I’ve been working here for more than a year. Prior to SLI, marami na rin akong napasukang trabaho. I went to about 3 BPO Companies bago ako natanggap sa SLI. Tsamba na rin yata yung pagpasok ko dito. I just tried my luck. Pero dahil sa family background ko, natanggap naman ako kaagad. Magaling daw sa real estate business ang daddy, so dugo daw ng isang magaling sa real estate ang nananalaytay sa akin. Now, I do have a stable job and I love working here because I get to work with the person who I want to be with for the rest of my life.

                Natigil ako nang kakaisip about my life when I remembered to text Red. Medyo 15 minutes na rin akong naghihintay sa kaniya. Medyo giniginaw na rin ako dahil 7PM na rin naman.

To: Red

Babe, d2 na ako sa helipad

        I texted him. Sumagot naman siya kaagad.

From: Red

Stay there. Don’t leave yet.

                May kakaiba talaga sa kaniya ngayon. Is he like breaking up with me or something? Marami din kasing nagsasabi na hindi kami bagay. Oo nga’t mayaman kami dati. Pero dati pa iyon. Marami din akong naririnig na kwento tungkol sa mga naging babae ‘daw’ ni Red. Pero simula nang naging kami, hindi ko naman naramdaman na nambababae siya. Sabi nga nila malakas ang instincts nang mga babae pagdating sa ganon. Pero ni isang hinala, hindi ko naramdaman. Ang tanging naramdaman ko lang galing sa kaniya at para din sa kaniya ay ang pagmamahal namin sa isa’t isa.

                Nirespeto niya ako at ang mga desisyon ko. Kahit na sinasabi nila na matinik daw sa mga babae si Red, ni minsan hindi niya ako pinilit. He never asked us to sleep together. He always brings me home on-time. He never insists and I never hear anything from him despite sa pagiging ‘conservative’ ko. Hanggang halikan lang sa lips at wala nang iba.

                Because of that, my family loves him too. Gustong-gusto siya nang mga parents ko, lalo na ni Daddy.

                I went back to my senses. Medyo kinakabahan na rin ako. From afar, nakita ko naman ang isang chopper heading to my direction. Hindi ko maaninag pero may nakasabit na parang message dun sa chopper. I tried to decipher kung ano yung nakasulat kahit na malayo pa. Pero habang papalapit, I was in awe when I read the message:

“Ms. Mayumi Bernadeth Enriquez,

Will you be my Mrs. Rafael Eduardo Saavedra?”

                Hindi ako makagalaw sa kinatatayuan ko. Then, I just realized that my tears were falling. I was very, very happy. I heard people clapping from behind. Hindi ko namalayan na may mga tao na pala sa paligid. I just can’t contain my overflowing emotions at this instance.

                I saw my family from afar. My dad, who was in a wheelchair, my mom, my kuya Benj, my ate Barbie, and my kuya Blue. They even have our dog Biscuit with them.

                Nakita ko rin yung mga kaibigan ko. I saw Andrea, Christine, Laila, Jorge, and Ben.

                Some employees were there as well.

                I saw Red alight from the chopper as soon as it landed. He was stunning in a tuxedo. He had a very commanding presence with his 6’1” frame. Kahit na gaano karaming tao ang nandoon that time, the moment I laid my eyes on him, I felt like we were the only people in there. He is my only one and I am only his.

                He headed straight to me smiling. He approached me and held my hand; tears were still flowing on my cheeks. While his right hand was holding my left, he wiped off those tears using his left hand and smiled at me.

                “Stop crying babe, I don’t want to see you cry. I want you to be the happiest woman in the world” He said. Hindi pa rin ako makapagsalita hanggang nagyon. Tinitigan ko pa rin siya nang hindi gumagalaw, but it just kept on getting better. He went down on one knee and took something from his left pocket. It was a tiny blue box. Namangha na nga ako when I realized that the box was from Tiffany and Co., but it even amazed me when he opened it.

                It was a shiny Tiffany heart shaped diamond ring surrounded by bead set diamonds.

                “Babe, I think instead of just looking at me, it would be better if you answer my question instead” He scratched his nape a bit na parang bang nahihiya. Hindi ko kasi namalayan na matagal na pala akong nakatitig lang sa kaniya.

                I just nodded. Then, I finally mustered the words to say “Yes! Yes, I would love to be Mrs. Red Saavedra”

                Gumuhit ang tuwa sa mukha ni Red “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I love you babe! I love you my Mrs. Saavedra” He then kissed me not minding na nandoon ang lahat nang miyembro nang pamilya ko.

        Red is like the sweetest person in the world. I love him so much and I would die kung mawawala pa siya sa akin.

        I heard people clapping from behind us. Red hugged me and tight and it took him a while before he let me go.

        Red thanked everyone na pumunta sa engagement namin. It was unfortunate that none of his family could come. All of his immediate family were out of the country. According to him, it was such short of a notice that they could not make it on time. But he said that they were very happy of the engagement.

        I can’t stop myself from crying while looking at the Tiffany diamond ring na sinuot ng boyfriend, now fiancé kong si Rafael Eduardo “Red” Saavedra. It was amazing! The feeling was surreal. It was a dream come true. No, scratch that. Red is my dream come true.
