The story was special. The legend was powerful.
There were moments or story lines I desperately wished for, and moments that at times seemed small but were so important to discover and delve into. This is a book of these moments that I wanted to ex...

Can sat at the rocks for what seemed like hours. Sitting on the spot that belonged to him and Sanem. He kept staring at the amber necklace. He could still feel the warmth of Sanem's hand in his when she returned the precious necklace that meant so much to both of them. He looked out at the water but the only view he saw was Sanem walking away, disappearing from his sight.
"It didn't work for me either.'' From all the words Sanem had spoken to him, this phrase was haunting him. So much meaning and loss was conveyed with these few simple words. Can repeated it so many times in his head that at one point, he even blurted it out. "It didn't work for me either." Can blinked back his tears, forcing them not to fall. He rubbed his face and the back of his neck, but the tension in his body was not alleviated. As much as he tried, Can wasn't able to move past Sanem's words, the pain in her eyes, or the decision she had made.
Can knew he was the one leaving. Running off to the Balkans. But it felt like he was the one being left behind. The one being abandoned. Can looked at the stone in his hands, wondering how this had all gone so unbelievably wrong. Why did she have to lie? Why couldn't she have trusted him? Why did she give Fabri what he wanted?
Can continued to reflect on Sanem's words. Although he and Sanem had been broken before, this time felt drastically different. She didn't want to be in his life anymore. Like Sanem said in the cottage on that snowy mountain side... she had enough friends; she didn't need another one. Can rubbed his chest, feeling a gripping tightness as he thought about Sanem and him being over. Really over.
Can held up the necklace again. He watched the reflection of the moonlight on the amber stone. He looked at it in awe remembering how he felt seeing this necklace around Sanem's neck. And what it meant for both of them. It was too painful to think about their moments together, and how the only thing that remained of their story was this darkened stone.
Can forced his thoughts away from Sanem and began to remember the time he had spent in the Balkan Mountains when he was first given the amber stone. He remembered the sweet couple he had stayed with for a few weeks. The time spent with Jurate and her husband Kastytis was only a short interlude in Can's extensive travels, but it was one of the most important times in his life.
Jurate and Kastytis were an elderly couple that had been married for 50 years. They taught Can so much about life and most importantly, about love. They beamed when they looked at each other, complimented each other, and even when they teased each other. They were patient with one another and with Can. He never thought it was possible for love to last, for people to stay. But this couple defied those odds and had made it through all the good and bad times together. At the time, Can was overwhelmed by the intensity of the love between Jurate and Kastytis. He could not imagine loving someone as much as they loved each other. That kind of love had seemed impossible and unattainable for him... until he met Sanem.
