Chapter 18: The Burden he had been Carrying.

"Eugene, your phone..." Rapunzel spoke in her sleepy voice as she moved closer to him, his hand grabbled on the bedside table with his eyes closed.

He slid his finger on the green option and pressed the device on his ear, "Hello?" He said in a groggy voice.

"Is this Eugene Winters?" A feminine voice came from the other line, he nodded his head and murmured a 'yes'.

"I am speaking from Lenox Hill Hospital, Miss Elsa Winters is in ER. We need you to come to the hospital." The lady stated, Eugene's eyes shot opened as he jumped off from the bed, grabbing his shirt.

"What-what happened?" He threw on his shirt and wore his slippers, grabbed his wallet and keys from the bedside table shoving it in his sweatpants pocket.

Rapunzel sat up from the bed looking at Eugene concerned, "Eugene, what's wrong?" She asked, he glanced at her giving her a reassuring nod and ran out of the apartment and to the elevator.

His finger pressed on the ground floor button and waited anxiously to get down to his car, "Miss Winters was in an accident and we need you here as soon as possible, sir." Eugene nodded his head and hung up.

God knows what happened with her, he always knew deep down that leaving her like that was a bad idea. Why would a random guy care for his sister? Now one thing was decided, once Elsa steps out of the hospital, he will force her to move in with him wether she likes it or not.

The elevator doors opened and he ran to the parking lot, unlocked his car, sitting in the driver's seat and twisted the key in the ignition. Eugene silently prayed to God for everything to be okay, for Elsa to be okay. But don't know why, his heart was troubled, his feelings were troubled this time.

Eugene took deep breathes calming himself before driving off.

He was slumped on the chair beside Nod's bed with his head in his hands, he ran his fingers through his silver hair for the nth time. He was only thinking one thing that, He took Elsa out for cycling and he left her in the middle of the road and some psychopath kidnapped her and now she was in the operating room.

It is all my fault, it is all my fault, it is all my fault. He was repeating it in his head like a mantra, clutching on his head. Nod was staring at the wall ahead with a blank look in his eyes.

"I was there and I couldn't save her." He murmured for the nth time.

"You didn't see the look in her eyes, Jack. She was so terrified and hopeless, she wanted to scream and run away from there, but that bastard--" He cut himself short and tightly closed his eyes, his head was already hurting from the hit he got at the back of his head even when he took pain relievers.

Jack listened to him without uttering a single word, he felt like his tongue was glued to the roof of his mouth, his throat was as dry as a sand paper.

He stood up from the chair and grabbed a water bottle, he twisted it open and chugged half of it down in one go.

What will Nod say if Jack tells him that it was all his fault for what happened to her. It was all his fault that now sword of death was dangling over her head, tied to a thin thread. Doctors told them that there seemed to be very less chances for her to live and she might die on the table.

Her airways and lungs were damaged, her appendix had burst, there was internal bleeding, her organs were effected, her arm was dislocated and her rib was broken, she also had a massive concussion. She was quite badly tortured and for a heart patient it was ten times worse.
