."Many Ladies in Frigga's court are agreeable and educated. Why don't you just choose one if they are pressuring you to marry? Set your eyes on one, be truthful, then woo her with your charms. Simple!" you told your friend, Loki, while the both of you were bonding over a cup of tea in his study. He had just told you that his father and mother were dropping passive aggressive hints about marriage and children and heirs.
"Like it's that simple," Loki paused to sip his tea. "Also charms? What charms do you speak of?" he asked innocently, but you know the game he's playing. Because you've played it far too many times.
"Oh, please! You flaunt it around me all the time. You're always like: 'Oh! I'm Loki. I'm so eloquent and charming and handsome!' It's getting quite annoying now." you mocked him lightheartedly.
"I don't sound like that. And quite frankly, I do not flaunt my feathers. I'm not a peacock. It seems to me that it's only you that notices them."
"I am not having this argument again, peacock!" you said jokingly.
"No, no. You told me I had charms so why don't you tell me of them so I can use them to my advantage?" Loki said while resting his chin on his palm.
You chuckled. "I'm sure you are well aware of them already. But what I will do though, is help you in choosing women of the court. Give you suggestions, if you will." you smiled.
Loki rolled his eyes.
"Oh come on! Just listen!" you told him.
"Alright, alright. Fine."
"Lady Erika is nice! She's very fashionable, elegant, educated. She's very fond of riding through the forest as much as I know-"
"She throws herself at Thor at every given opportunity. Next."
"Lady Isolde! She is a bookworm. She's a graceful dancer and very handsome as well. She also knows her way around a violin. She's a talented young woman. What say you?"
He groaned. "She's a big gossip as far as I know... Well, you know what? All of the ladies in court are gossips. That is all they talk about. The lives of other people instead of their own. It's so annoying."
"I'm a lady of Frigga's court and I don't gossip. Thank you very much." you sniffed.
"Well that explains it." Loki grumbled underneath his breath. You immediately understood what he was implying but you did not want to believe. You will not.
"No, Loki. Whatever you're thinking... It's not wise." you warned him. He was silent, the machines in his brain already working.
"Loki..." you said.
"Just... What if?" he finally said.
"You are being delusional, Loki."
"Why? I am being completely rational here. You are a lady of the court. You're my friend. Wouldn't be easier if that were the case?"
You scoffed. "Loki I have no 'queenly' potential and I know you see that. I am rough and boyish and I always have ink on my hands because I never part from my desk to write silly stories that no one but I can read. I dirty and scorch my gowns in the palace library so often it's embarrassing. And I am no graceful lady. I am clumsy and foolish and goofy and I am not one bit wise." you huffed.
"You have much potential you just don't see it. You are kind and strong willed. You do not see the world in black and white. You see and understand reason. You are smart and just. And what do you mean you're not wise? You are the only person that gives me good advice when my world is falling apart. You are everything a princess or queen can require."
You scoffed sarcastically. "Still, that is far too much pressure. I can never make big decisions for others. I can't even make them for myself."
"Then I will be by your side every time that you do."
You looked at him and smiled genuinely before chuckling sardonically. "You are crazy for entertaining the idea of us being man and wife. You speak as if our lives would forever be paradise if we were to wed and not a train wreck."
"Because it would be paradise." Loki said confidently.
"Loki..."
"Now, you look at me and tell me you are not happy everytime we spend time together. Tell me that would not trust me even if it would cost your life. Tell me that you cannot stand the sight of me. Tell me, and I will not ever entertain this idea again."
You stared at him firmly for a long time before responding. "I cannot tell you those things because they are not true." you told him reluctantly.
"Then why do you despise this idea?"
"Because I am afraid to lose the Loki I know," you told him sadly. "We are great together as friends Loki, but I am not so sure in romance. Love and lust can change a person so much. And I am terrified of the fact that I will not see this version of Loki ever again when we are in love."
Loki looked at you sadly and took your hand to lead you in the middle of his study. He then wrapped his arms around you in a secure hug.
"If I promise you I will not change... Will you accept my hand?" he asked you softly.
"Of course," you told him softly. "I don't know how or why, when or where but I've always known that I love you, Loki. A kind of love I can't explain... I just do," you smiled up at him. "You have seen me in my best and worst, and yet you have not thought of me any differently."
"You have seen me at my lowest and you helped me rise back up again. I will love you forever for it. We will be fine, I know it. We will be happy, I am sure."
"Loki?"
"Yes?"
"This is your charm."
Loki chuckled. "If my lady says so."
