I'm so glad I'm not driving anymore. I never actually got my licence and I'd failed my test 3 times already. Maggie was driving and spotted the smoke.
Gale, who was examining his game; 2 rabbits, a squirrel and some strange bird that resembled a chicken but probably wasn't, looks up and takes a deep sigh. "How are we even sure Glenn made that fire, come on guys we've got to be sensible here."
"Yeah like you're ever sensible Gale" Maggie chokes. Gale puts his head into his hands, "Look Maggie, the fire was probably made ages ago, I bet it's out by now!"
"No" Kenzie stutters in, "the smokes black, if it was white then the fire would be out." We all turn and look at her. "What?" she replies "sometimes I did listen in chemistry class"
I roll my eyes at her, then turn back around to face the fire.
Maggie parks the car at the side of the forest. "You lot stay here, you two girls I want you to be safe and Gale you can protect them, okay?" Maggie says sternly.
"Maggie, I don't wanna stay here" pleads Gale.
"Yeah, and I'm not a little kid, I'm 18 you know!" I moan.
"Fine" Maggie mumbles, "but someone needs to stay with the car and Kenzie is still hurt from the crash, Gale you stay with her and me and Amalie go"
I hear Gale make a frustrated groan as he gets back into the car. But before Maggie has time to make comment, she rushes into the forest hopping over twigs, gun in one hand and knife in the other. I only have a knife but I'm fine with it, guns only attract more walkers anyway and it's important you only shoot if you desperately need to.
"You really love him, don't you?" I look up at Maggie.
"Well, duh, he's my husband" she replies bluntly.
"I know, I know, but you always hear these stories about how marriage never works out and stuff" I say.
Maggie stops in her tracks, "well it works for us. Me and Glenn, we love each other, we met during all of this"
Maggie then realises she's wasting time stopping and rushes off again, I hurry after her.
"Get down!" I whisper harshly and pull Maggie to the ground as I stab a walker in the head. Maggie smiles at me and nods as if to say "thank you". I do the same back. I look down at the dead walker and the corners of my mouth turn downwards. I know it's an evil monster and I understand we have to kill them. But I always think about the people the walkers used to be.
This walker is a female, probably, as she has long what must've been blonde hair but now it's sticky with blood and mud. Her clothes are a pair of pyjamas, I think, as again it's hard to tell underneath all the muck. She must've died early on in the outbreak, probably confused in the middle of the night. Just scared and helpless and then... the unthinkable would of happened to her. I shiver as it reminds me of my mother's death.
When I look up again Maggie's already up and running, gesturing to me to get a move on. I take a deep breath in and step over the walker and follow Maggie though the tall trees.
