Headline: Airport Floods in Japan
The moment I settle into the passenger seat, I knock out asleep.
Mira can gut me later, not now.
The car ride home feels like a second as I drift in and out of sleep. The low hum of the engine quietens down as Mira pulls up to the penthouse we share. At this point, I am somewhat conscious. But that doesn't stop Mira from hitting me over the head.
"Are you dumb or are you dumb?" she demands.
"I'm screwed," I say with a soft smile.
"I don't get paid enough for this," she grumbles as she exits the car and walks over to my side to open my door.
"I could give you a raise," I offer playfully as she slings one of arms over her shoulder and helps me to the lift.
"I'd rather quit," she retorts quickly and I shake my head in mock disappointment.
"You know, I'm hungover, not crippled," I joke and she shoots me a glare. The elevator ride is blurry and fuzzy as I struggle to fully wake up.
"I wish I never met you," she mumbles under her breath, but loudly enough for me to hear.
"I love you too," I coo. She quickly keys in our code and pretty soon, I am thrown onto the sofa. My eyes take in the familiar white decor and accent pieces of my house and for some reason, I am overwhelmed with a strange sense of homesickness.
I smile crookedly at Mira whose hands are planted firmly on her hips.
"You're going to tell me why you took 5 hours in his office," she demands. My eyes shoot wide open at her implications.
"Oh, God. Okay, I know what you're thinking - and I would never," I hurriedly jump up.
"SAY IT CLEARLY!" Mira cries in exasperation.
"I swear we didn't hook up!" I squeeze my eyes shut, bracing myself for some sort of hit. Nothing. I slowly open my eyes and Mira's looking at me in disbelief.
"Hana," she lets out a humourless laugh, "I know you. You would never just hook up with someone - and it's not as if he would want to hook up with you. I'm asking why it took you so long to clear up the misunderstanding!"
My mouth hangs open.
Stupid Hana.
"Ah. Right. Well, I'll have you know that staying single was a choice-"
Mira starts to snap a comeback but I hold a hand up to stop her.
"And we never got started on the lawsuit! The bastard whipped out some alcohol and we got drunk - like, stupid, stupid drunk. I'm pretty sure I even told him about the time you hit some poor dude at a party-"
"Hana! You promised me you'd never tell anyo-"
"And we just ended up chugging vodka like a bunch of frat boys! Then we just knocked out! I woke up to him somehow managing to have the clarity of mind to do some random work- so no. The lawsuit was never discussed!" I throw my hands up in defeat. Mira is quiet as she eyes me.
"You reek of alcohol. And as much as I am trying so hard to not beat you up, I am your friend. Hell, I became your friend before I became your secretary. So I need to ask if you're okay and if he drugged you and if-"
"He didn't drug me," I say seriously. She starts messaging her temples and sinks into the sofa beside me.
"I was really worried about you," she mumbles and suddenly the joke of the situation disappeared.
