The next couple of days went by quickly. Each day I got to see Camila and last night we ended up sitting side my side on the bleachers watching the sunset. We only spoke of how the day went and how exhausted we were. Any conversation with her is one that I enjoy. We are getting to know each other again, and I think I'm falling for her harder than I anticipated. It's literally driving me crazy.
We held hands again tonight, walking back to the trailers until James spotted us and gave me a death glare. I quickly removed my hand from hers and attempted to walk back to my own trailer, however I bumped into Mario Cabello on the way back.
"Shawn! Good to see you." He said.
"You too Mr. Cabello sir." I replied.
"I couldn't help but notice you and my daughter walking hand in hand around the infield just now. Anything I should know?" He asked.
Ummm....well....how do I answer this..
Gulp..
"Umm yes sir, we did." Taking a deep breath "But there isn't really anything to know because there's nothing going on between us right now." I said, looking at him in the eyes. "James will make sure of that." I stated matter of factly.
"I'm sure he will. If my memory serves me right, you have a track record of hurting my girl...I don't like when people mess with my family Shawn." He said sternly. "I suggest if you want to try again with her, you make it worth her while. Understand?" He raised an eyebrow at me.
"Yes sir! But like I said sir, there's really nothing going on between us." I said as I noticed a flash of long, wavy brunette hair over Mario's shoulder.
Camila.
"Nothing going on between us huh Shawn?" She spat venomously at me. She looked like someone had just run over her dog. Mario turned to his daughter in surprise and tried to pipe up, but Camila threw her hands up in the air.
"Don't dad! I don't want to hear it!" She said quietly.
"Camila..." I tried.
"Go on Shawn...nothing to see here!" She cried as tears ran down her face.
I tried to take a few steps closer to her as I walked around Mario. Reaching out for her hand, she slapped my hand away.
"Don't! DON'T touch me Shawn." She screamed.
"Camila please!" I begged.
"No you asshole. Leave me alone. I don't want to see you again." She'd told me and now it was my turn for my stomach to drop and my face to sink.
Turning on her heel, she grabbed her helmet from the nearby table and took one of James' Vespa's and sped off.
Damnit Shawn!
Mario glared at me and then left the scene in an angry huff.
Without thinking I jumped in a near by golf cart and sped off after Camila.
After what felt like an hour, which was only actually a matter of minutes, I found her sitting curled up against one of the walls in Turn 1 of the track.
This gets us to where I am currently. Once I spotted her, I drove the golf cart and parked it next to the Vespa.
I can hear the quiet sounds of sobs and questions of "Why am I so stupid?" Or "You're a fool to think he likes you."
My heart shatters.. I can't take this anymore as I climb off the golf cart and go to sit down next to her.
"Go away Shawn!" She sniffles, her voice muffled against her arms.
"No Camila, I'm sorry!" I sigh. "Will you please look at me?" I try.
"Why? Why should I?" She says lifting her head and staring off into the distance. Her face is red from crying and I can still see tears trickle down her face.
"Camila please. Can you just hear me out? I'm sorry! You're dad caught me off guard!" I attempt to reason. "I didn't mean to say there isn't anything going on between us, but the truth is, I don't know what's going on." I say.
With that she looks at me with a huff. Her eyes show she's defeated. "I guess you're right. I guess holding your hand and watching sunsets together doesn't count for anything." She sighs.
"That's not what I meant and you know that!" I say.
"Then what did you mean Shawn? Huh? Because right now I'm so confused and lost and I..."
In an instant my lips are on hers, stopping any more words from coming out of her mouth. She tries to push me away, but I'm not letting her go that easy.
Breaking away I look her square in the eyes. "I'm sorry I kissed you, but will you please just let me explain?" I say, my face still very close to hers. I can feel her breath fanning my cheeks and she blushes slightly.
"I guess I don't have a choice now." She says, looking down she turns to face me. We are sitting on the track, knees to knees. The summer sky is starting to change colors as the sun sets.
"Camila, every moment I've spent with you these past few days, these past few weeks has been amazing. I'm lucky enough that you've even given me the chance to be back in your life. I'm so sorry for what you heard when I was talking to your dad. I just don't know what to say. I want to be your friend, but I also want more than that." I say as I reach out for her hands.
She allows me to wrap mine around hers as she looks up at me. Her face still wet with tears, but as beautiful as ever.
"I'm so sorry Mila...I'm so sorry."
"It's okay.." she says quietly. "I'm sorry for over reacting again...I just...I just, things with us have been so fresh and new and this friendship thing is driving me crazy because I don't know how to be that way with you..." she continues. "It just threw me when you basically told my dad I was nothing to you. I don't want to be nothing to you Shawn." She sighs.
I move one of my hands to cup her cheek. "I don't want to mean nothing to you either Camila. I want to see where this goes." I say reassuringly.
She nods in understanding and agreement. Her face still cradled in one of my hands, she lifts her hands to either side of my face.
"Will you kiss me again? That wasn't a proper first kiss." She says.
I think I'm in shock because her words don't seem to register. "I'm sorry...what?" I say dumbfounded.
"I said kiss me Shawn." Her hands still on either side of my face.
Leaning forward, I slowly inch closer to her. Our noses touch first as I let the tension build. Reaching the rest of the way, I close the space and take her lips with mine. She tastes like salt and strawberry Chapstick, a spark ignites between us. Her lips so smooth against mine, I almost wish I hadn't kissed her earlier, that I had waited for this moment.
As the sun sets behind us in the background, we can't stop kissing. Our lips moving together as we enjoy this new found comfort with each other. Heat races down my body as she finds her way into my lap and grabs my curls in her hands.
Ohhh yes that feels so good.
She finally breaks away for some much needed oxygen and rests her forehead against mine.
"Wow!" She whispers.
"Wow indeed Miss. Cabello!" I smirk.
