Alec was laying on his bed. He had just woke up and he was thinking. He was always thinking, he hadn't been able to stop thinking since he broke up with Magnus.

His mind wandered back to when he had rushed out of the apartment, tears streaming down his face. He had tried not to think about what he had just done. As soon as Alec had been outside of the apartment, and out of Magnus' earshot, he had called Isabelle.

She had picked up on the first ring. "Alec?"

"Isabelle, hey, uh...can I stay at the Institute?"

"I thought you were staying with Magnus."

"Um, well, not really. I mean, not anymore."

"Because of last night?"

"Yeah, we broke up. Well, I broke up with him. He cheated on me, and I was just - just...I was just so angry."

"Are you okay?"

"No."

There had been a long pause.

"So, can I stay at the Institute?" Alec had repeated.

"Yeah, sure, of course." Izzy had paused, and he had been able to almost visualize her biting her lip. "Mom and Dad are here." She had said it as if it was a vase she had to be careful not to drop.

"Why would that matter?" Alec had replied a bit too harshly. Out of all times, he had thought, They come now?

"Alec...I just thought-"

"No, no. Never mind. Thanks Iz."

"Kay, well I'll see you here."

"Bye."

He had hung up and shoved his phone in his pocket, walking quickly to the Institute as the wind dried his tears.

A knock on the door jolted Alec out of his thoughts. "Go away." He said, pulling the blanket over his head.

"You know you want me to come in." A voice teased. Jace.

"Not really." Alec sighed.

Jace pushed open the door anyway, Alec couldn't see it with his head under the sheets, but he could hear it. Alec was also pretty sure Jace had sat on the edge of the bed, he felt the mattress sink down.

"Mom and Dad want you to come to dinner." Alec briefly wondered if he felt odd calling them that, since they aren't his actual parents. Then what he had said dawned on him.

He pulled the sheets down from his head and sat up next to his parabatai. "No." Alec said. "I am not coming to dinner."

"They think you're depressed."

"I have been in my room for over a week."

"Are you?" Jace asked.

"What?" Alec furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, his black hair sweeping in front of his eyes.

"Are you depressed?" Jace clarified his question.

"Yeah, I think so. I mean, like sad. I guess. I don't know." Alec ran a hand through his hair, flipping back the unbrushed strands. "I miss him, you know? But I'm still angry at him...and I don't know. I just can't think straight."

"Of course you can't think straight," Jace replied. "You're gay."

Alec glared at him. "Not funny."

"I thought it was pre-" He cut himself off when he saw Alec staring at the ground.

His look was on of pure hopelessness, like he was lost in the sea, or in the shadows of his heart.
