"There's some crazy blond chick in our apartment," Laine's voice echoes in my mind.
Oh wait, he's still on the phone with me.
"Laine... Did you drunkenly bring home a conquest?" Amusement slips into my tone. It's a likely scenario.
"What? No! You know I wouldn't do that!" he huffs, outraged that I even asked. I can imagine him stubbornly crossing his arms right about now.
"Okay," I laugh at the visual. "Did you maybe drunkenly bring in another one of your stoner friends?" Another likely scenario.
"No, Ellie," he frustratedly sighs. "She says she's here for you."
My brows crinkle. "Me? Come on, Laine. We both know people like to throw my name around because of Daffodil. Kick her out or something."
"You don't think I tried? That's not even the worst part!"
"What is?" As if having an unexpected guest isn't bad enough.
"She knows my name too!"
I sigh in relief, followed by rolling my eyes at his drama. My logical side battles out the panic in my heart. "Okay, that means she's a mutual friend. We probably had one of those rooftop hangouts together. How do you not remember her?" I know the answer. He was probably too far gone to remember her face.
"She claims she won't leave until she sees you."
I frustratedly groan. Having random strangers in my apartment sounds way too unappealing. "This probably about Daffodil, then. Tell her I'll throw in a discount for her if she leaves right now." That's a lie but maybe she'll leave. That's how most people leave me alone once they find out I'm the PA of The Great Daffodil. They're all looking for some connections.
"Hold on." His voice is muffled as he repeats my words to the girl. I can't hear her response. Seconds later, he's breathing heavily on line. "She wants to meet you in person and almost threw something at me when I suggested for her pathetic ass to leave."
"Laine!" I gasp. "A little harsh, no?"
"She's in our fucking house!" Laine repeats incredulously. "I think I have the right to be harsh."
Hmm, he has a good point there.
"Please, Ellie. Just stop by. I'm going to bash my brains out."
"Alright, alright," I sigh, looking around me. Danny looks at me, concerned. I flash him a small smile as I mentally rearrange my day so I can deal with this psycho. "I'll be there soon."
"Thanks, El," Laine sighs before hanging up.
I put the phone down and take a few deep breaths. Although it's been weeks since the whole PR package mix up fiasco, something tells me Daffodil will be less than pleased if I skip out in the middle of the day. I need to lie.
"Danny, I have a little bit of an emergency," I say nervously as I bite my lip. Not technically a lie.
He nods frantically. "Anything I can do for you?"
I triumphantly smile. "Cover for me?"
"Of course! What should I tell her if she asks?"
I purse my lips as I think of a good excuse. "Tell her... hmm. Oh! Tell her that I'm going to hand-deliver the Robinson package!"
