Song of the chapter: Exile - Taylor Swift ft Bon Iver
~
"I'm Elena, Harry's girlfriend," the girl says. She adjusts her fur coat so it sets on her shoulders. Her long dark hair cascades behind her back until her waist, annoyingly straight. "And who are you?"
I manage to plaster on one of Daff's infamous fake smiles as I stand up. "I'm Ellie, Harry's friend. In fact, he's told me so much about you!" I lie, pretending to sound cheery.
My heart's breaking just a little but I know damn well I won't let it show right now.
I realize how suspicious this all sounds. I mean, if I walked in on my boyfriend with some random girl, I'd be pretty damn pissed. "Well, I'm actually here for Zayn but he's taking a call in the bedroom so I'm waiting out here."
She nods, seemingly relieved at my lie. Now I just feel more guilty. Here I was, thinking that I could snuggle Harry close until he got bored at his one-sided flirting. But no, he has a girlfriend.
He didn't even tell me! I wouldn't have called him if he did.
I can't believe I expected him to wait a little before moving on. I'm so stupid. Who am I to expect that?
I'm more disappointed in myself for getting my hopes up.
"Elena," Harry says, sounding surprised. "I didn't expect for you to come back so soon."
"Paris était ennuyeux*," she says in a beautiful accent that almost makes my jaw drop. Almost. "I decided to come back early to surprise you!"
Oh my God, I'm the intruder here.
"I'm just going to find Zayn," I squeak, feeling incredibly awkward right now. Before either of them can respond, I barge over to the guest room. Much to my luck, it isn't locked! I silently thank the Gods before slipping into his room and closing the door behind me.
"Huh?" Zayn sleepily mumbles. I flip on the lights, making him wince. He sits up and rubs his eyes as I apologize. "Ellie? What's wrong?"
"Oh, nothing," I say as I trace my finger along the wooden dresser. "Harry's girlfriend is out there right now and I really don't want to intrude."
He fully wakes up now. "He has a girlfriend?!" He seems just as shocked as me, if not more.
"Yup." I purse my lips, trying to hide my frown. "Now I feel a little awkward. I told her I was here for you though, hence why I'm here."
"Well shit," he grumbles, running his hands through his hair. "What now?"
"Now?" I laugh. "Now I wait a few minutes, pretend our conversation is over, and get the hell out of here before they do it on the couch." A shudder passes through me. I sat on that couch.
"Do you need a ride?"
I shake my head. "I'll just Uber." I think about the money I'll be wasting and inwardly groan. But, I don't want Zayn to give me a ride. He's practically asleep. "Don't worry, go back to bed. I'll be slipping out now."
"Okay," he yawns before lying down.
"Goodnight," I whisper as I shut off the light and leave his room. Before approaching the living room, I make sure there aren't any gross sounds. All I hear are bits of hushed conversation that stop when I come into view.
I awkwardly wave. "So, I'll just be heading out. I'm sorry I ruined your surprise," I tell her. She waves her hand like it's no big deal.
Harry frowns. "Do you need a ride home?"
