Chapter 26 - Goodbye?

"Your backing out?" Kai asked hoping to ease Amos by letting the Alpha and his mate explain.

"You were right when you said that it was me who wanted to severe the bond." Xander explained. "But I changed my mind."

"You changed your mind?" Everyone turned to Amos as he spoke as everyone could see how an earlier calm and quiet young man, suddenly has found his voice, angry and agitated. "You can't just change your mind, and think that everyone else will accept it like it's nothing."

"I understand your frustration. But we have talked it over. My mate and I. And we decided together to work things out." Xander said further.

"And what does the human girl has to say about it?" Amos asked directing the conversation to Belle.

Belle stood up. Her hands still holding Xander's and squeezing it.

"It's as Xander said." She said. "We decided to work things out together, as mates, and we will not go thru with severing our bond. We are deeply sorry if we have wasted your time; I hope you understand."

"Understand?" Amos exclaimed. "I did not come all the way here to hear you say you are working things out with your werewolf mate; I came here to free you from that bond."

"Free me?" Belle said in a low voice, confused.

"Free?!" Xander also said but his voice is louder. Standing up he pushed Belle behind him and stood in front of the younger council member. "Our bond isn't some prison bar keeping her in."

"It is a shackle." Amos said eerily calm. Unbothered by the fact that he is standing at the heart of one of the strongest wolf packs in tbe country.

"What?" Xander asked amazed at how this young man could talk like that and say those things. He's a fucking council member for crying out loud.

"Amos, that is enough." Kai said suddenly. Even he is getting concerned at how Amos is saying completely rude words. Council member or not, this isn't their teritory.

"I agree." Xander interrupted instead. "I've had enough of this. I'm sorry for wasting your time, that was on me, but there's no way I'm letting you disrespect us like that. Please leave!"

Amos stood his ground and everyone stared at him in amazement, even his own companion Kai is shocked.

"Dad!" Xander called to his father Luca without looking back. "Please go and take Belle with you."

"Xander?" Belle said wanting to argue. But whatever it is she wanted to say she forgot when Xander looked back at her. His eyes are determined and domineering. He didn't have to say anyword, Belle understood. He needed her out of there.

Then he looked at his father. There were no words said between them but Belle knew they are talking thru the pack link.

Then Luca grabbed her and said, "Let's go Belle."

"You didn't waste my time." Amos said all of a sudden. Xander turned to him but before he could turn completely, he heard a loud bang and felt the wind swoosh right by the side of his face, at the same time Kai screamed Amos's name and ran to him.

It all happened so fast that when he managed to looked at Amos, Kai is already holding Amos' arms above his head, a gun in his hand, it's mouth smoking.

Xander had no idea what just happened, he never even heard any gunshot, he looked down his body, there were no wounds, no blood, not even pain. He maybe a werewolf, but he isn't superman who is immune to gunshots.

"Xander." He heard Aoi whisper, he looked at his Beta and Aoi is looking at the ground behind him.

Xander turned around and saw his father kneeling on the ground, Belle in his arms, her chest bleeding, her eyes looking up to him, her lips pale but smiling.
