Chapter 27 - Unbothered

Xander sat at the waiting room in the hospital with his head in his hands. Everything keeps playing back over and over in his mind but still he doesn't understand what happened.

They woke up today full of hope in the future that they have started building...and now he's sitting here praying to God and the Goddess not to take his mate away.

He already wasted enough time to be with Belle because of the past he couldn't let go. And now this...

His thoughts were interrupted when the door to the waiting room burst open and in came a face he knew is going to be there soon enough.

"Xander!" Kyle exclaimed bursting in thru the door. "I heard..."

Kyle could not go on with what he's saying because of the look his bestfriend is showing.

He hasn't seen Xander this vulnerable ever since the incident years ago. Xander looks so defeated, desperate.

Kyle walked in and sat beside his bestfriend.

"What happened Xander?" he asked softly.

"I don't know Kyle." Xander started. "Even I am not sure how this all came to be. One moment we were all standing there, and then, the council..."

Xander couldn't continue. No matter what the council did, he could not stop blaming himself.

"I couldn't protect her."

"You didn't even know she was in danger." Kyle said. "Who knew a council member could do something like that."

The door opened once again and they both turned to see Aoi coming in.

"Alpha," he greeted and nodded at Kyle.

"Did you tell them?" Xander asked.

"Yes. I reported it to the council."

"What did they say?"

"They said they'll do an investigation. Nothing like this has ever happened before and they said they can't just act because of the words from a Beta."

Xander turned away from Aoi and held his head. Somehow, he knew that the council will act like that. They protect their own.

"What about those two?" Xander asked referring to the two council members who caused all this chaos.

"They are at the basement prison like you ordered." Aoi answered. "Sora is with them along with our top warriors."

They all stood there waiting patiently for the other door to open. The door leading to the operating room where Maia is trying to save Belle. And after a few more moments of waiting in silence, the operating door opened and Maia came out, still donned on her operating suit.

All three of them stood up and looked expectantly at Maia. She has a smile on her face, at least that's a good sign.

None of them spoke, they just stood there and waited for Maia to say what she has to say.

"Well, I did the best I could. She lost a lot of blood but we managed to resolved that. Amazingly enough, the bullet missed her heart with an inch so she's out of danger." Maia said. They were holding their breath all this time and breathe in a sigh of relief with what she said.

"Can I go see her?" Xander asked.

"We will transfer her to the recovery room and you can visit her there. But Alpha..."

Xander looked at Maia with fear in his eyes.

"What is it?" He asked.

"Well...we detected something strange in her brainwaves."
