Left, right and centre was tall pillars of burnt oak. My sense of smell was filled with a thick stench of rotting leaves and the ashes of dead trees. A black cover of smog made the atmosphere thick, causing most of us to cough or splutter.

The deceased and patchy woodland stretched out for miles. There was no direct path. It had been covered by fallen branches or knotted roots that clung onto the ground stubbornly.

Bare branches stuck up to the sky. The smoke making a strange orange luminous light lighting up our few meters of vision, the distance nothing more than a blur of grey.

"Let's stick together where possible please" Vella called from the front of our pack, clinging onto her blaster desperately.

I did the same, keeping it close to my chest and my mechanics tool bag slung over my left shoulder, as I walked it would thump against my thigh non stop- it would definitely leave a bruise.

"Do you want me to carry that" Anj pointed down where the bag was hanging but keeping her eyes on the floor incase she tripped.

"No it's fine thank you" I smiled gently at her offer but it wasn't that heavy. I could handle myself. I took a few careful steps again.

In one swift movement the world became a rapid blur around me. It came so fast but felt so slow.

I was falling.

My eyes shot open in shock, perception of time disorientated. The sky above me seemed to be getting further away, I reached my hand up to see if I could grasp onto the endless crevasse of grey and faint orange above me.

I hit the ground.

The pain was sharp and spreading quickly from my hip. I had landed on the tool bag. I felt my bones move in a way they shouldn't. Without looking I could feel hot blood spooling from my side excruciatingly slowly.

The pain wasn't unbearable but my skin was becoming an ashen tone. I lay on the ground, awkwardly moving so I was sitting up.

Instantly I head panicked shouts and screaming from above me.
