At first, I didn't believe them. Who would? But when the thing was standing in front of me, it's eye stalk staring at me unforgivingly, I started to believe.
"You will answer." The thing droned in a robotic voice. "Or you will be exterminated." I swallowed harshly, nodding violently. I was pressed into the corner, terrified.
"Your name. What is your name?" It inquired.
"Scarlet Smith." I stammered.
"Where is the Doctor?" It demanded of me.
"The Doctor? Who's the Doctor?" I asked, my heart practically stopping. I didn't know what it was asking for. It was going to kill me.
"You are friends with the Doctor. Where is he?" It continued.
"I don't know! Honest!" I shouted, covering my face with my arms. The thing whirred, sounding like an engine revving.
"The Doctor!" The thing said. If it had emotion, I would almost say it was frightened.
"Yes, that's me, hello." I looked up to see my savior, a man wearing a tan jacket and red striped shirt, his bow tie matching red.
"I'm the Doctor. And I believe you're frightening her." He extended a hand to me, not taking his eyes off the monster.
"Doctor will come with me!" I stood, slowly approaching the Doctor. He wrapped an arm around my waist like we were good friends. I didn't mind.
"And why would I do that?" The Doctor asked, offering a thin smile to me. I didn't respond.
"You will follow or be exterminated!" It confirmed.
"I suppose I can't argue with that." The Doctor looked at me, and gave a gentle squeeze. It was oddly comforting.
"Follow!" The thing screamed.
"What about her? Can't we let her leave?" The Doctor demanded. The thing hesitated.
"No." It answered.
"No? Come on, she's a silly little human, see? No harm." He winked at me.
"No. The girl is a friend of the Doctor. She will follow." He sighed deeply.
"If anything happens to her, anything at all, I will kill you. All of you. And you will beg for mercy." His voice became dangerous.
"Daleks do not beg." The thing- I'm assuming a Dalek- monotoned.
"Exactly." The Doctor finished. There was a tangible silence for several seconds before the Dalek turned.
"You will follow." The Doctor didn't look at me while releasing me, starting to walk behind the metal creature.
"You're following it?" I demanded, whispering fiercely.
"Do you want to be exterminated?" He asked, a grin tugging at the corner of his mouth.
"Well, no- but I don't want to follow him, either. Isn't there a third option?" I opted. He let out a laugh.
"A third option? No, none of that. Just those two. Personally, I would rather wait to see what's in store and I do think that you have enough sense to do the same." He said easily enough.
"I don't want to die, Doctor." His face darkened as I said that.
"And you won't. I won't let anything hurt you." He promised.
"I'm a stranger to you. Why would you say that?" I asked. He was quiet for a moment.
"Because you are not a stranger to me. I know you better than you know yourself, and vise versa. Just not now. I know you in the future." I didn't stop walking.
"You know me in the future? Doesn't that make you a time traveller?" I asked. He nodded.
"Quite right." He smiled.
"So we don't die right now?" My hopes soared.
"Time can be rewritten." He said sadly. I stared at he the tip of my sneakers morosely.
"What is that thing?" I asked.
"A Dalek. A creature of hate." He spat disgustedly.
"I take it you're not a fan of Daleks, then?" I joked.
"Oh, neither are you. You absolutely hate them." His arm twitched like he was starting to reach for me. I had seen my best friend's ex do that several times, where he forgot they weren't together. I took his hand, feeling instantly drawn towards him.
"You don't think I'm a nutter?" He asked, seeming almost shocked.
"If you're a nutter, I'm a nutter." I answered.
"Why? I'm a strange man holding your hand, following a creature that wants to destroy everything." He smirked.
"I don't know. I just... Trust you." I nodded decisively.
"All talking will cease." The Dalek said. The Doctor made a face and I covered my mouth with my hand to avoid giggling like a proper idiot.
I looked up and saw it. The ship, so high up it looked like a smudge. I felt myself stop walking and the Doctor's grip tightened and he started to pull. I followed numbly.
"If you stop walking, it'll kill you." He hissed.
"Stop talking!" It yelled. I gave a nod and his face softened. He gave my hand a quick squeeze and released the pressure.
The streets of London were empty, the Daleks having all scare them inside. Except for stupid me. There's no way aliens have invaded us, I had thought. Don't be so thick.
"Elevate." The Dalek said.
"And how are we supposed to get up there?" The Doctor asked. "You could let me use my ship." He said suggestively.
"The Doctor will not be permitted his ship!" The thing practically screamed. The Doctor let out a sigh.
"Well, it was worth a shot." He muttered.
"You will climb the rope." As he said it, a solid piece of rope dangled in front of me and him.
"I'm rubbish at climbing." I lied.
"You will climb or be exterminated." It threatened. I let out a snort, earning a strange look from the Doctor.
"Don't you know any other word besides 'exterminate'?" I questioned.
"You will climb or be exterminated." I rolled my eyes and locked at the Doctor.
"Shall we?"
