The Doctor let out a sound so inhuman even Jack was frightened. Jack killed the Dalek and they both went to Scarlet's side, the Doctor yelling and pounding his fists into the wall. Her eyes were closed like she was sleeping, her lips slightly parted like they were about to take another breath. Her blond hair was splayed out around her like a fan.
"Doctor-" Jack tried. The Doctor collapsed beside her, pulling her into his lap and stroking her hair gently.
"She never got to do anything." He sobbed. Jack was never very good at the comforting thing, so he hoped his presence was enough.
"I was going to show her the world, Jack. This world and every other world in the entire universe. And we were going to never stop." He was talking quickly, crying.
"Doctor." Jack saw it first.
"We would've seen the first humans and the last and every other between. She would've faced down every single thing because she was fearless and brilliant." He continued.
"Doctor!" Jack said, louder. He started to laugh.
"The things I was going to show her." The poor Doctor moaned.
"Doctor, look at her!" He yelled. The Doctor listened, pulling away from her. Golden particles were floating from her mouth, like she was trying to... Regenerate.
"She opened the watch!" And he looked at her hand. Clutched in it was a tiny FOB watch. They both backed away as there was a brilliant light, even the Doctor had to avert his gaze.
Scarlet took in a breath and choked.
"That was a dramatic change." Jack commented. She jumped to her feet, looking in the reflection at her new self.
"I'm a ginger!" She exclaimed happily, tugging on a lock of curly red hair.
"No fair! As long as I've wanted to be a ginger." The Doctor complained. Scarlet turned to him with a whirl of her skirt.
"This is my third time being a ginger." She wiggled her fingers.
"And I'm still a girl!" She giggled. Her eyes were like fractured stained glass, a million different colors that fit together beautifully.
"You're beautiful." The Doctor said.
"Yeah, but the Doctor thinks machinery is beautiful, too. Take it from someone else. You are." Jack grinned as the Doctor shot him a glare.
"How are you alive?" The Doctor asked. Scarlet tucked a patch of loose hair behind her ear and started to go red.
"My mother sent me away. When I was little. Put me through a chameleon arch and rewrote my DNA into a human. Before the war started. How did it end, Doctor?" She asked. Jack looked at the Doctor expectantly, but without meeting his eyes.
"No one won. Everything was lost." Jack watched as her face fell.
"We- we're all alone, then?" She asked. Jack winced.
"The ship should destruct in ten minutes. We've got to get back to the TARDIS before then." The Doctor ignored her. She stood there for several seconds.
"Doctor?" She asked. When he didn't answer, she called again.
"Yes! We're the only ones. Gallifrey has fallen." He winced at the harshness in his own voice. She gave a nod.
"Alright. To the TARDIS."
