Coming Clean
"Okay, I am here. What now? Dinner? News?"
The sheriff glanced out the office window making certain that CM wasn't around to chew up his hat as he took a seat. He looked around expecting a meal which was not there.
"Dinner? Sure, maybe later. I mean if you still want to after," I replied from behind my desk.
"If I still wanted to?"
"How come you never asked me about Mr. Times? Or did you know already that I came to town to meet him?"
"Mr. Times?" he asked.
"Mr. Times. Parker Times! You know, he ran the newspaper office" I shook my head "You asked me to run the newspaper office after he passed away?"
"Was that his name? We all came to town at the same time. I didn't know him well" he said "He was going to interview you for a position. That's why you were writing away in that diary of yours."
"I wasn't here for a job. He was Pa's ... I mean my father's friend. He helped keep me hidden after my parent's death." I sniffed "I was tired of hiding and wanted to get rid of the property. I was hoping to move away."
"That's news to me! What else you holding back, Muffin?" he asked.
"My Grandfather had disinherited my uncle from the property. They never got along. Uncle Garret was always trouble. He drank and gambled and ran after skirts. That's what Ma used to say. Uncle Garret was mad. One afternoon, they attacked our farm. They killed ... I was about 12 then"
"Why am I just hearing about this now? After all these years?"
"I wasn't planning on staying!" I said. "And when you asked me to take over the paper, it wasn't relevant."
"Can we get something to eat while you're telling me all this?"
"You might need a drink as well ... there's more" I nodded.
"More! Well then make it a double and may I take my boots off and put my feet up?"
I nodded again. I only had lemonade gin and I poured him a glass leaving the bottle out.
"Most of the property was burned but I managed to escape. I made it to Mr. Gus in Carson City and Mr. Parker brought me to BG. From here I went in hiding to his sister's place. William and Ewell were mad that I got away but when William saw my father's will he was furious," I continued.
"Okay, is William the cousin that tried to frame you? Any muffins to go with the drink?" I asked.
I pulled out a box of muffins from the desk and tossed him a strawberry muffin.
"Yes. He was there helping his father," I covered my eyes. "Uncle Garret... he was standing over my father... and I wanted to stop him... the gun was lying there... I don't know... It happened so fast and he fell over. But there was a second shot. There was blood everywhere. My father was yelling to run. That's when I heard William scream and I ran. I got out of there as fast as I could.""
"I -" he stood.
Billy rapped lightly on the door.I wiped my face, "What is it?"
"Everything is in place? The sun has set, we need to go."
"We'll talk more when I get back," the sheriff said giving my hand a squeeze and taking his hat.
I nodded following him out and watched him leave for the jail.
Not certain I'd be here. For I had someone I needed to meet.
