Seated behind the desk,
The latest Golden Pillar in his hand,
I receive a warm grin.
"Mornin' Billy, how ya been?"
"Morning Myna, I'm hangin' in, how about you?"
I grin right back, "Can't complain, taking things one day at a time."
"That's good to hear, how are the babies and Aunt Sue?"
"Aw the babies are growin' like weeds, they are ornery like their dad. Aunt Sue...well she is a pillar of strength, but she misses Bubba too."
Billy stands and hugs me, "I am always here for you."
I return the hug and linger a moment, "I know, thank you, Billy, you have always been a good friend and remember, I am here for you too."
A moment passes, and we both take a seat, "So what brings you around? Is this a social call?"

"As a matter of fact, it's not, I'm looking to answer some questions. I know you have been investigating Simon and his crew. Rumor has it he was involved with Ewell, is that true?"
"Yes, it seems that he was."
"I don't know if 3Gun told you, but I had a bit of a confrontation with Simon at the café, he was scarin' the babies. I made it quite clear that he needed to back off, but why would that make him want to come after me?"
"I can't say for sure, but it looks like he was trying to find a way to get Ewell out of jail. We found some notes among his belongings that indicate he wanted to force you to help get Ewell out, before Marshal Law showed up. He may have set his sights on you after what happened at the café."
"Not a smart move on his part, especially after I let him know I was a former deputy and that my husband was the Mayor."
Billy let out a chuckle, "I have a feeling no one ever accused Simon of being smart."
"I suppose it doesn't really matter now, but in a twisted way it makes sense. Thank you, Billy."
"You and the Lorne keep your eyes and ears open. We had gotten word Ewell escaped. Pitts and the Marshall were ambushed going back to County. He'd be stupid to show up back here but like I said, smarts are definitely not the forte of this crew."
I thanked him for the warning, it may not be over yet, but Ewell had any sense at all me and my family he'd forget.
