Once there was a girl

She was shy and afraid

She thought the world was very wide

And wanted her mark to be displayed

She believed the lies and half truths

That everyone around her told

She was naive and innocent

Her eyes were open and her heart was bold

She stared at the brightest stars

Believing she could fly to them on high

She pretended the clouds were mountains

Ones that she one day would climb

A heart so full of wonder

Dreams were within her grasp

Always reaching forward

Taking the next step with no hand to clasp

Little did she know

That was all it would ever be

Nothing short of wishes

Only just a dream

Once there was a girl

Who gazed into a mirror of glass

A graying woman that time forgot

Was all that emptily stared back
