Chapter - 42

"You are a survivor.I must commend on your survival skill"
Suddenly she removed the oxygen mask.
Azalea's breathing rate became erratic.
"Can you hear that sound?"Azalea blinked up to see Regina holding Azalea's oxygen mask.
Her own voice died in her throat.She gave a strangled sob.
"Please...."
"Aah..you hear the sound Azalea?That's the sound of your death."
Azalea panicked and her heart monitor picked up.
Was she dreaming?Where the hell was everyone?
"Confused?You see everyone was tired and I offered to stay back and look after my daughter- in- law."
She put the oxygen mask back.
Azalea breathed in relief.
"I am not having second thoughts trust me.I think you deserve some answers."
"Let's start from the beginning."Regina spoke in her obnoxious nasal tone.
"I drugged Bruce and poisoned Bianca's mind.She felt right on my trap thinking his husband has cheated her with me.
I faked pregnancy and Bruce being Bruce, played the gentleman card.Poor thing.And married to me after Bianca left.Later I actually conceived with Xavier.
Though Roxanna was not planned.But you see I love my children.I wanted everything for them which I never had.
But their happiness was always secondary to Bruce, in front of Xander."She spat venomously.
"Hated him then.Hate him now.I had an impeccable plan ready and he would be dead till now if not for you".Azalea closed her eyes and pictured Xander's funeral.Didn't Regina succeeded that time?

"And one thing you bitch.Don't ever smudge my Xavier's name in mud.He has nothing to do in the drug purchase.Anyway after today,you won't be able to."
Azalea wanted to reply back but it seems as if her voice has died down her throat.
"Oh?I think I'm forgetting something."She tapped her shoes and pretended to think.
"Aah..yes,Xander will soon join you.I have planned to destroy one of his factory where it will be easy to inject him.
You know with?"
"Mescaline."Azalea whispered and tears streamed down her face.
"I should give you this.You are one smart bitch.Whereas these two Kings' men."

"That's enough."Bruce roared and entered the room making Regina gasped and widened her eyes.
He was followed by Xavier and Roxanna whose face was equally pale and disappointed.Tears streaming down her face.
Lastly,Xander followed suit alongwith the police.
"Arrest this women.I think you have ample proof of lies,distortion,cheating and murder."Xander swore under his breath.
The police cuffed Regina.
"No,no you can't do that.Xavier,Xavier I did this for you.
Bruce did wrong to you.You should have got 50% in the company."
"No mom..uh..I don't know whether I should call you this anymore or not.
Anyway, as for your allegation against Dad.After Xander got 50% of the company's share he came to me..He came to me,to share his percentage with me.It was me who refused him.
I wanted to spend on a sports company,hence I won't be able to invest my time in Kings' Enterprise so I refused.
Do you know what my brother did?
He gifted me the sports company through his money.His money mom."Xavier's eyes held both anger and disappointment.
Regina's eyes widened.
"Even I have to say something.
The new boutique which I always aspire to buy,was also purchased by my elder brother Xander."Roxanna interposed.
"So mom if it's someone who has ever treated him like a step son.It's you.
We were never step brother and sister to Xander."
She sobbed loudly and hugged Xander.
"Shh..baby sis."
"Regina..wow.I don't know what to say.Did you even love me?"
Bruce's voice cracked making tears welled up in Azalea's eye.
Both the sons looked down at their shoes.

"Now,you listen what you did to me could be forgivable.But what you did to Azalea,What you were going to do with my son,Xander is unpardonable.
Arrest her officer and make sure she recieves life sentence."

"Mrs King you have the right to remain silent.Anything you say can be used against you in court.
You have the right to talk to a lawyer for advice before we ask any question."

"Also,I am divorcing you.You don't deserve my name,my money,hell you do not deserve my love.
Take her."
"Noo..Regina cried.
You don't have any proof."
"Seriously Regina?Are you that dense?
There is a recorder,a closed-circuit television right above you.
Officer take this woman."Bruce replied sternly.

After the police left with Regina:
Everyone's eye rested on Azalea.Xander moved towards her side and held her hand.

Bruce moved towards her and said:"Hey,child how are you feeling now?You lost a lot of blood.I am ashamed of myself.My own wife inflicted you with so much pain."
Azalea shook her head.

"Its blood that tied us..Its blood we shall never shed.."She whispered making everyone smile.
"Though I am not related to you through blood.But this is my family too."
Something as warmth flickered in his eyes.
"C,mon quit the hovering everyone.Azalea needs to rest."Bruce commanded.He looked very old and tired all of a sudden.

She gave a saddened smile to everyone.In the past days each of them had suffered quite the ordeal.

When they left,Xander asked gently.
"Are you alright?"
"I'll live.By the way how do know that Regina was behind all of this?"
He gave a glass of water to Azalea.And relayed the story.
"You were the one who whispered her name."
"Me?I don't remember."
"I almost didn't catch.
Do you remember I told you to switch on the voice recorder?"
Azalea nodded.
"It recorded everything that went down between those ruffians and Regina."
"I'm glad."
"I am not though.I  should have prevented this from the beginning.I should have paid more heed to your security.We were entering unchartered territory.Yet,I risked both our lives."
Something a little unhinged flickered in his eyes.This wasn't the Xander she normally got to see,not the sophisticated ,cool gentleman.This Xander was dangerous.

"So in view of the circumstances.
I hereby free you from all the wifely duties."
Azalea couldn't have heard right.
"You mean?"
"I mean that I am divorcing you Azalea.And I have settled a house,a monthly stipend on your name which will help you lead your life comfortably.I have informed your parents.They must be on their way."

Xander looked aloof,his eyes cold.
The world suddenly came crashing down upon her.
Didn't the soul deliverer assigned her on a mission to find Xander's killer?
It was her personal feeble attempt to make Xander fall for her.So now what?

Fate...Her mind reminded her.
She shut her eyes and again opened them.Her blue scared eyes laced with that of  a desolate grey one.
"Xander?"
"Yes?"
"Please don't do this."
It was a plea of a distraught soul.
"Its because of me you're in this situation."
She laced her finger with his.Mustering up some courage she finally said:

"I love you Xander.I have been for a while.I know this was not the part of this marriage.I know you don't believe in love.But you do trust me don't you?
Let me show you how beautiful love is."

"Love is all but a fairytale Azalea.It destroys us.Its just an illusion of a trifled mind."
Even to himself his words sounded hollow.

"But.."
"Don't Lea.I have made my decision.I like you very much.You have made me very happy.But it's me,who doesn't deserve you.So I am setting you free."

"I'll be free as a bird when I'll fly in your love cage Xander.Why can't you see that?"

"And why the hell are you making this complicated Azalea?We had a deal remember?And now you are breaching our contract."He snapped at her.
If he would slapped her that would've have been even better.
His words pricked her like needles.
A small lump formed in her throat.

"I have settled a.."
"I don't want a penny from you Xander King.Incase you don't realised my love is not for sale.And if you think that this is some kind of consolation for sleeping with me then you couldn't be more wrong.
Please leave me alone."
"But.."
"Please."
Azalea faced the other side.Her eyes were filled with tears.She refused to break down infront of a man who is as heartless as a beast.
"Goodbye Azalea."
"Goodbye Xander..."
