47 Let's Go Home

Sage

"Can you calm down?" Xander's calm voice cut through the phone. 

"I can't fucking calm down, Xander. You don't understand…"

"I understand, Sage. I know what happened" he whispered.

"What?"

"The baby" his sympathetic tone made me stop whatever I was about to say and just take a breather.

"Xander.."

"Arabella texted me as soon as you told her about what Phoenix said. I'm so sorry, I wish I could have been there for you…"

"I know, but you can be there for your daughter. Don't let them get to her" I was panicking. They wouldn't kill her, that's for sure, but Axel's mind goes to dark places when he thinks about how they locked me up in the basement back at the house, to keep me safe. He thinks they might want to take her away and use her as a constant power source, which was honestly worse than death.

"But if they needed her, why wait till now?" I could read the confusion in his tone. 

Axel took the phone from me, put it on speaker and set it down on the table.

"They had their eye on her, Xander. Why else would Steven come in and join your pack. Its all making so much fucking sense now" he looked at me with creased brows.

"Stefan" I corrected.

"I don't care"

There was a dead silence on the other end of the line, well, aside from Xander's pounding heart.

"Hello" Axel inspected to see if the call was still on.

That was followed by a curse and Xander barking orders for the Palace to be shut down, immediately. 

"That's not going to be enough" I shook my head. 

"It'll have to do for now" he was angrily cursing under his breath. 

He kept on talking to someone, his Beta I guess. 

"Sage" he suddenly startled us up.

"Yeah"

"What?" Axel and I both replied in unison. 

"That's why some more of the Alliyah pack moved away after Stefan's capture and that wolf attack" he was mumbling.

"Xander, a little context, please" Axel was getting impatient with him, I could tell. 

"Vampire magic is stronger, obviously. So when they figured out whatever darkness was in Sage was more powerful, they probably had the wolves back off" 

"They all left?" I asked

"No. The betas and some others. I interrogated the others. They know nothing"

"Interrogated?" that was from Axel.

"I had a witch run through their memory" Xander replied plainly. 

Axel let out a very satisfied, I knew he approved of that. 

"Don't worry" Xander assured "They're not getting anywhere near my daughter"

I nodded and then realised he couldn't see me, but before I could say anything else, he spoke.

"But did they find the fuckin spell they were looking for?" 

I was about to say something, but was once again cut off. This time by Axel. 

"I don't want to find out. Just protect your daughter, Xander. We have to go. Call if you need anything" and he cut the call.
