After a hectic night of insomnia, I groaned as the early rays of sun crept through my curtains, casting shadows over my bed. After a quick shower to wake myself up, I opened my suitcase and pulled out a pair of neatly folded uniform pieces. Running my hands through my hair hastily, I walked out the common room and into the great hall, where Harry promptly waved me over. I uttered a quick "morning" to the trio which they returned, before grabbing a few slices of bacon. Owls flew above me, bringing parcels to their owners as I compared schedules with Harry, Ron, and Hermione. I looked up and noticed Harry's face get tense

"what do you want, Malfoy" he spat and I turned around in my seat to face the Slytherin boy who towered over me.
"Simply for you to introduce to your little girlfriend" he said, nodding his head in my direction.
"I'm about as much his girlfriend as you are a natural blonde" I quipped
Taken aback, he laughed and responded "new girl's got fire". I rolled my eyes in response. He held out his ringed hand as he said
"since Pottah isn't going to introduce me, I'll have to do it myself. I'm Malfoy, Draco Malfoy" he said with pride. My eyes flitted down to his outstretched hand before slowly reaching up my own to take it. As I pulled it away, I swiftly pulled off one of his rings, holding it up to my eyes to examine it.
"Snakes?" I asked, referring to the creatures etched onto the silver ring.
"I am a Slytherin, after all", He chuckled, brows raised. I placed the ring onto my middle finger, briefly gazing at the sight before taking it off and offering it back.
"I'm (y/n) Lestrange" I said, his ring still in my outstretched hand. He reached out to take it, but I pulled it back, continuing, "let's be abundantly clear here, Malfoy. We will never be on good terms, I don't like the way you treat my friends." I finished, cocking my head in the trio's direction, who all shot me beaming smiles before returning to glare at Malfoy. He paused, seemingly to be having trouble absorbing the fact that a girl wasn't falling at his feet. "We'll see about that" He said finally. I scoffed, extending my outstretched arm to return his ring.
"Keep it"
"What?"
"Looks better on you"

And with that, he turned and walked back to his table. "What a self-centered git" I complained to my friends, receiving nods of agreement. I watched as Malfoy took his seat, a black haired girl immediately latching onto his arm before shooting me a deadly glare. I smiled menacingly before throwing up a middle finger at her direction, making sure to display my new ring. Her eyes widened before filling up with jealousy and I laughed, looking back over at my bushy-haired friend. I pointed at her schedule and inquired

"Hermione, how do you plan on getting to class? You're schedule's way overbooked, you've got three classes at the same time this morning".

Hermione, however, didn't seem at all bothered by her predicament, simply shrugging it off as we all made our way to our first class; divination. Sitting in the overheated and over decorated classroom, I was slightly startled by the sudden entrance of who I presumed was my Divination teacher.

"Welcome," she said to the class. "How nice to see you in the physical world at last."
"Wonder who let the knobby bejewelled insect out of her mental asylum" I mused to Harry, who snickered loudly, playing it off as a cough when we got a few glances. The insect in question did not seem to notice, and continued on with the same airy tone

"Sit, my children, sit,"

I followed the trio to a bunch of pouffes and sank into one next to Ron and Hermione.

"Welcome to Divination," said Professor Trelawney, who had seated herself in a winged armchair in front of the fire. "My name is Professor Trelawney. You may not have seen me before. I find that descending too often into the hustle and bustle of the main school clouds my Inner Eye." Me and Hermione scrunched up our noses at the air headed woman. Many witches and wizards, talented though they are in the area of loud bangs and smells and sudden disappearings, are yet unable to penetrate the veiled mysteries of the future,"Professor Trelawney went on, "It is a Gift granted to few. You, boy," she said suddenly to a boy I had seen chasing a toad around the common room.
