"(Y/n), dear, is there something wrong with the food?" Narcissa's austere voice cut through my thoughts, making my head shoot us from my plate to the dinner table, "you've hardly touched your food all night"
"Oh, I ate earlier" I answered politely
"How much earlier, you've been getting so thin recently" Bella piped up from the far end of the table
"Like an hour ago" I responded, pressing my lips together into a strained line
"You know, (y/n), if you're trying to lose weight, I heard of this new diet in the health section of witch weekly" Astoria chimed with superficial innocence next to Draco, and I ground my teeth together, "I mean I haven't tried it, see, I have a naturally slim figure, but you should let me know how it goes!"
"She's just trying to piss you off" Westeria whispered into my ear
"Well it's working" I grumbled back, dissecting my potatoes with my fork
"Oh, isn't my daughter just an angel?" Mrs. Greengrass gushed next to Narcissa, bread crumbs dribbling down her dress
"She's...definitely...your daughter" Aletheo remarked lowly with raised brows and Rue chortled into her salmon
"My son certainly chose a good one" Lucius' nonchalant words made my hand lose grip of my fork, landing in the carpet below with a dull thud that no one seemed to register through the disbelief at the implications of his statement
"I wasn't aware I was being given a choice" Draco said with a light scoff, knuckles tightening as his father breathed in sharply with chagrin
"Don't mind him, he's just been stressed, what with all the pressure of this potion task" Narcissa insisted quickly, trying to weather the steadily building storm at the table
"Did you know they were together?" Emerson whispered to his sister, and she shook her head
"I mean, I heard Greengrass running her mouth off about going to dinner with him the other day but I thought she was making shit up for her ego's sake" Rue murmured with a distinct look of distaste
"Narcissa, you must learn to stop making excuses for the boy, he knows better than to behave like this in front of guests" Bellatrix snarled with a displeased tone, "And what'd you keep looking up for, (y/n)?"
"Owl post" I muttered half heartedly, my eyes tracing over the glass panels on the roof, a few of which were always left open a crack for owls to fly in through during dinner, "I'm expecting a letter"
I was expecting multiple, actually. One from Harry, another from Hermione, and a third from Ron, all carefully worded with the impression that I was on vacation with distant family.
"When the owls fly through rain they've been trained to return directly to their shed and deliver their mail when the weather clears" Narcissa informed me, explainsing why the the glass panels were now sealed shut
"It's just go and get it now" I said, picking my napkin off my lap and tossing it over my untouched plate
"No need, I'll send Bubbsy to fetch it for you" Narcissa offered, turning to call over the house elf before I spoke
"Its alright, I need some air anyways" I insisted, rising from my chair with haste and averting my eyes from the heather grey ones across from me
"It's pouring out there" Blaise said with concern
"I like the rain" I shrugged offhandedly
"It's not safe, (y/n)" He pressed with a sigh
"Neither is downing five consecutive bottles of firewhiskey, but that didn't stop you, did it?" I countered with a sarcastic grin before jogging out of the dining room
Thunder cracked with the same fury as a mythical beast, bolstering the darkening sky with its vibrant light as I trudged through the path that led to the owl shed. My heart swelled with the same fury as the thunderstorm when I heard my name called like an elicited plea
"Lestrange! Lestrange you're gonna get hurt, the shed's on the other side of the garden!" Draco shouted over the downpour
"If that means there's also a chance that you get struck by lighting then I'm fine with that" I called without looking over my shoulder, occasionally spitting out a mouthful of rainwater
"You can get your stupid fucking letter in the morning" he argued, and I wrapped my arms around my soaked body in an attempt to conserve my bodily warmth
"And you can suck my fucking cock" I replied, my teeth chattering wildly
"Why'd you always have to be so stubborn, Lestrange?" He denounced, and I finally stopped to face him
"Sod off, Malfoy" I yelled caustically, "wouldn't want your prissy girlfriend to get worried, now would we?"
"Are you mad?" He cried incredulously, running a hand through his water dredged locks with a laugh, "you think I give a shit about her?"
"I don't care if you do, I don't care if you grow old and weary with her and fuck yourselves three bratty kids that you raise in another cold, lifeless mansion" I bit back, shoving a lie straight through my teeth, "Because I might be far too prideful to find happiness in being a brainless housewife, but at least I can find comfort in the thought that I'll never have to burden myself with another man and his idiocies"
"You know what, you're right, you are far too prideful" he gritted, hands curled into first, raindrops tumbling past his veins and knuckles as his breath vaporised in the air, "you'd make a terrible housewife"
"So why cant you just leave me alone?" I demanded
"Because I'm in love with you" He bellowed in his distress, making my lungs cripple with the sharp drawing of the frigid and sudden tension between us
