I woke up to the song of birds and the smell of waffles.
The waffles - I noticed after opening my eyes - were sitting on a plate at the door. I got off the bed to inspect them. There was a small cocktail stick stuck in one with a note attached to it. The note read:
Enjoy. Don't worry, they're not poisoned.
Love Gareth.
Love Gareth. Who does he think he is?
I sniffed the waffles - which were covered in syrup - and took a bite. They were delicious. They could have tasted terrible but I was so hungry I would've settled for anything.
After I had finished, I went over and sat on the chair by the window.
It was a beautiful day. The sun was almost blinding me. I lay back and bathed in the golden light that would be taken away in roughly eight hours.
I heard a knock on the door and stood up quickly. The door opened and Gareth stepped in. "Did you have a good sleep?" he said.
I seriously hate this guy, I thought.
"Well, considering I am being held against my will by a creep..." I gave him a death stare, "no I didn't sleep particularly well..."
I was about to continue but suddenly Gareth was in front of me and in the blink of an eye had his hands on my throat. My heart stopped.
"No more of that smart talk, am I clear?"
I stood still and took tiny breaths. His hands squeezed tighter around my neck and I coughed, gasping for air.
"Am I clear?"
I nodded and he released me. I collapsed to the floor, hugging my neck with my hands.
Gareth glared at me, and for a millisecond I caught a glint of red in his eyes. This guy's evil, I thought.
When Gareth left I finally relaxed and let go. Tears rolled down my cheeks as a mixture of sadness and fear filled me up. I wiped my face with the back of my hand and squeezed my eyes shut. A stray tear escaped and I allowed it to travel down to my chin.
I stared at the wall then began to scratch at it with my nails. I began to write a message on the wall. That way if anyone found this house after I was murdered or moved elsewhere, people would know I was here. When I finished it read:
Ashley Green. Kept here 23/10/10.
I walked over to the window and looked out. Then I had an idea. I looked at the chair, then back at the window. The chair was metal. Surely it would break the glass?
I lifted the chair and threw it against the window. The glass cracked slightly. I picked the chair up again and threw it at the window with all my strength. The window smashed into tiny pieces.
I hurriedly climbed out onto the window sill. I looked around for something to grab onto. Lucky for me, there was a pipe nearby. I grabbed onto the sill, wincing in pain as the glass cut through my palm. I swung my legs over and then leaped onto the pipe. It held. I slowly slid down until I got close enough to the ground that I could jump. After that I kept running. I heard shouts and yells but I wouldn't stop.
I got to the gate and kicked it open, my heart racing. I was free! I gasped for air and leaped into the closest bush to hide.
Neil was the first to come out. He looked around, scanning the place like a vulture looking for its prey. Then he went inside. I breathed out in relief. However, the relief didn't last long.
"Boo," a voice came behind me. I jumped in fright and turned around to see who it was. It was Neil. How had he gotten here so fast...and so quietly?
