Ricky's POV - Several Years Later
He races ahead of me with such unbelievable energy, just like his father. At least there are no more streets to cross to get to the park. Who knew that keeping up with a five year old could be so much work, but here I was again in our usual weekend routine. He's not even looking where he is going and almost runs into an elderly lady with a walker. I rush to catch up.
"What's your name young man?" I hear her ask as I reach the two of them.
"Samuel Richard Lawley." Sam replies confidently with a big smile.
"And who is this?" She asks, pointing at me and smiling. At least he ran into a nice older lady and not a grumpy one.
"That's my Uncle Ricky. He's taking me to the park." Sam says and wraps his arms around my legs.
"You are lucky to have such a nice uncle. Listen to what he has to say." She says while winking at me and then moves on.
"Sam, you need to watch where you are going." I admonish gently. Sam smiles at me. "Let's go swing." I say. Sam takes me by the hand and leads me to the swings.
"Do you love me Uncle Ricky?" He asks.
"Of course. You are very special to me?" I reply.
"Why?" Sam asks in typical young child fashion.
"Because you're a very special person. I've been there since you were born. Your Daddy is my best friend and I love him very much. I love you too." I reply thinking about how much has changed since Sam was born.
"Ok. I hope I make a best friend like you and Daddy." Sam responds as we reach the swings. I lift him in and begin swinging him. I look around at all of the different kids on the play ground and respond, "I think you will. I really hope you do."
