It was past supper when I heard knocking at the front door. Stewart was working late, I wondered if he had forgotten his keys.

“Uncle Stewart?” I asked, waiting for a reply before opening the door. It might be a small town but that didn’t mean you should just open up for anyone.

“Lilly, it’s me…Cayn.”

“Oh.” I was surprised, opening the door for him. “What do you want?” I snapped a little harsher then required.

“Why you were upset with me today?”

I wasn’t upset with you.” I lied, walking into the kitchen to fetch a glass of soda. Cayn followed, his footsteps sounding heavy due to his boots. I got us both a glass and two cans, handing him his as he sat down.

“Yes you were, at lunch.”

“Oh, lunch.” I said wishing we weren’t having this conversation. I didn’t like being or feeling jealous, I had always sworn I wouldn’t be that type of girl and yet that is exactly how I had felt today.

“What happened? Did I piss you off?” he asked, those big brown eyes searching my face.

“Kinda.” I raised the glass to my lips, not daring to look back at him.

“Lilly, you have to tell me what I did. I don’t understand. I thought we were cool?”

“Cool?”

“Yes. I mean you must know that id never purposely piss you off. You mean more to me then that.” He reached for my hand but I withheld it.

“I mean more to you then what, because I didn’t seem to mean more to you when you were flirting and ignoring me.” I hissed.

“That was not flirting and I didn’t ignore you.” He retorted, taking a sip before slamming the glass back down. “She is a friend. I was being nice. I’m not going to stop being nice just because we are dating. You cant expect that from me.”

“That was more then you being nice.” I eyed Cayn carefully. “How would you like it if I threw myself at Levi or Tyler? What if I forgot about you while I was busy being …nice?”

Cayn sat back in his chair not saying a word.

“I’ve never had a proper boyfriend before but that doesn’t mean that I don’t understand the rules of a relationship. No more flirting. I mean it or we’re done. I won’t play second to your ego.”

“You’re right; I was acting like an ass. I’m sorry if you thought I was flirting. The truth is no girl could replace the way I feel about you.” Cayn took hold of both my hands and held them tightly, his eyes sorrowful. “ It’s all new for me too. I promise, from now on I will be on my best behavior.”

“You better be. I don’t like feeling like that and I am not wasting my time on you if you’re just waiting for someone new to come along.”
