this is a snippet of an AU (or in other words a TLDR of an AU)

and that being said, a Royalty AU, simple and comforting (cause im a sucker for anything related to 'royalty' lmao)

Her hands are shaking, she doesn't know why.

She should be used to this by now. The bright lights, the judging eyes, the attention. She was their heir apparent, after all. She was known all across the country for the position and power she held.

But still, her hands shook like a child's. And as the heavy doors before her open, revealing the bustling party on the inside, she hides them behind her back.

Even though this was the ball to celebrate her wedding that would happen in the following days, no one stood at her side for support. Goddess knows what that consort was up to. Everyone had been waiting for her to make her choice, and if only to silence their voices she did what they had asked.

Taking a deep breath in, straightening her back as she tightly gripped her hands behind her back, she takes a step forward.

'Presenting,' another step forward. She just has to last the evening. 'her Highness, the Crowned Princess.'

Wide eyes stared back at her, watching her every movement.

Was this what was to become of her life from now on? An animal in a cage, if she did anything wrong or was found that she ever went against their orders, she would be silenced and mocked and taunted. To be Queen was a gift, they told her. A position to cherish and present proudly, but was it really worth all this?

The rest of the night passes like a blur. The names come out like muscle-memory, allowing her to zone out as people passed with their greetings and well-wishes. It was only when one, some noble boy she hasn't seen before, finally greets her towards the end of the night.

'Wow, you're pretty popular, your majesty.'

Bright blue eyes like the ocean she never got to see and a boyish carefree smile.

'Kiro?'

He laughs, reaching for her hand and bowing as he presses a kiss against its front.

'You've always had an eye for me. Huh, MC?'

The boy she fell in love with. Kiro, a clumsy servant who spilled a drink on her dress his first day on the job. Here he stood. Dressed finely like the noblemen they expected. Only MC could see the person lying underneath.

'Surprised?' he asks after her stunned silence.

'I am.' She speaks as calmly as possible. 'You could be thrown out for impersonating a nobleman, you know.'

'Only if I get caught.' he winks, and she has to repress the urge to laugh. He was charming and handsome, but this was dangerous for them both. 'Besides, I couldn't miss the ball commemorating your big day!'

A lie, they both knew. 'Kiro...'

'I know this is stupid dangerous,' A relationship built on years of trust and secrecy was hard to throw away in an instant, it was stupid of her to think she could do so in an instant. 'But, I needed to see you.'

'It's...' she takes a sharp breath in. They must be watching, her expression couldn't change. 'It's fine. I understand, truly. It's...refreshing to see you now, Kiro.' she says softly.

'I'm glad.' she sees his tense shoulders relax. 'Now, dear Princess, would you spare a dance for a lowly nobleman like myself?'

He bows, his hand extends, asking for her own. 'Please?'

One dance wouldn't hurt anyone, would it?

'I would be honored.' her hand falls into his. 'Though 'lowly' is far a word I would use to describe you, my prince.'

'A Prince?' he repeats, laughing as a hand sits comfortably at her waist. 'If only, am I right?'

'Goddess, if only.' She places a hand on his shoulder, and they blend easily into the crowd of other dancers. Each gracefully spin in a soothing waltz.

'You look beautiful.' he compliments.

'As do you. How did you acquire such an outfit?'

'I know some people in town.' she raises a brow.

'And did they-'

'I trust them, don't worry.' a small smile appears on his face. 'But, no. They didn't know.'

'And your dancing...' she comments. They dance in tune, neither lagging against the other. 'Have you practiced?'

'I've watched many balls before.'

'Ah, and it is only fit that you learned easily. By simply watching on the sidelines.'

He laughs. 'You know me so well.'

The couple share the same sad smile and the music finally ends. Their gazes linger for far too long, but neither want to be the one to look away.

The world disappears around them. It's almost like breathing at that point. The way she leaned in, how he turned his head. She presses a soft, meaningful kiss to his lips.

And as quickly as it happened, they let go. But, both are left wanting more, as it had been for the past few years.

'I'm sorry, I...' she trails off. What could she say that hasn't been known already?

'Don't...don't forget about me, alright?'

He tries to smile, but she knows it isn't genuine.

Studying his expression, something she's done time and time again, something in her clicks. All this time she's been a coward, sticking to the safe side if the option presented itself. Always doing as expected. Working to be someone, though she wasn't sure if that someone was herself.

She realizes, it's always been Kiro who was able to pull her out of her own head. He grounded her. And the thought of losing him scared her more then life itself.

'I want you, Kiro. I don't care what happens to us.' she says firmly, a newfound look of determination fills her expression.

'I know that as long as you are at my side, nothing could go wrong.'

Kiro pauses, a look of surprise appears on his face. After a moment's hesitation, he nods slowly.

'That- I feel the same way.'

'Nothing will split us apart.'

Her hand leaves his, if only to keep her elegant, queenly appearance as she smooths out the fabric of her gown. He smiles as she meets his eye again. The pair had a lot of work ahead of them, but for the first time in her life she wasn't afraid. In fact, she was the most hopeful she's ever felt in her lifetime.
