'You don't have to come, you know.' she says as she catches Gavin watching her through the mirror. She smiles as his head quickly turns the other way.

'I want to.' he replies.

'But, you didn't go to yours last year, why go now?'

'Last year was different.' he says simply. 'I didn't know many of the people in my grade, and the ones who are still my friends I can see any other day. I know this means something to you, that's why I want to go now.'

'Gavin...' he gets up from his seat and takes the spot beside her.

'I want to stand by your side.'

'Gavin!' she falls into his arms, pressing her head into her shoulder. 'You're so sweet! It's embarrassing.'

'Oh? Should I stop, then?'

'...no.' she admits.

'Alright.' he laughs. 'I'll go and change, then we can leave together.'

As Gavin steps out of the car and sees the old high school building before him, he's immediately hit with a sense of nostalgia his mind has longed to suppress. He sees the front entrance of the school where he'd linger when the bell rang in the mornings, intentionally skipping class, but barely making it off of school grounds before some prideful gang of upperclassmen came to pick a fight.

He looks back at MC as she takes his hand. To his surprise, her face showed the exact opposite emotions.

'I missed this place.' she says happily.

'Really? Most people don't look back on their time in high school and smile, like you.'

'Well, it's mostly my last two years I reminisce on.' She says without problem. Tonight, it seemed that every time she opened her mouth Gavin's cheeks would turn red.

The pair follow the crowd, eventually collecting into the Gym where it had been decorated for her class's 5 year reunion.

Fortunately for Gavin, most underclassmen had forgotten about him and his reputation. That, or they didn't show it as he stood at MC's side. The loveliest girl known to man had distracted them as they caught up. The few who did catch Gavin's eye were his teachers, and later in the night they found themselves separated as Gavin finished talking to one stopping by.

He searched the crowd for her, recognizing her immediately through the crowd of people, he made his way to her as she stood by the entrance. But, he finds that she didn't stand alone.

'I still love you.' he hears once when he's still a bit away. The man beside her was yelling over the loud music and overlapping voices. But, in Gavin's mind the words were clear enough.

He makes his way to her side, taking her hand as he throws a stern look at the man before her.

'She's with me.'

'I hadn't realized.' the man says through gritted teeth. 'You're Gavin, right?' and the man chuckles to himself. 'The one who would get into fights? Wow, that really is something.'

Gavin goes to speak again, but MC holds his hand tighter and begins to speak for herself. 'You're acting like a child.'

'Me? I'm just-'

'We're all adults, aren't we? If you can't handle the fact that I'm with someone else, it's best you get over yourself and leave.'

Gavin turns to her, looking at her with admiration, and reminding him further just why he fell in love with her.

The man scoffs and walks out the entrance. When MC meets his eye, she places a hand on his cheek.

'You're incredible.'

'An overstatement.' she giggles. 'But, thank you.'

Her lips curve down into a frown as she looks back towards the gym. 'My ex. What a burden on our night, huh?'

'Do you want to leave?' he suggests.

'Maybe.'

'Or...' he leads her outside. 'Follow me.'

'Gavin? Where are you going?'

'Just trust me.' he smiles. How could she object?

-

'You brought me to the roof?' her laugh is joyous, and her mind is immediately taken off of the man from before.

'I used to stay here all the time.' he explains. 'Mostly to skip class and well...I just thought it would be nice for tonight.'

'It's perfect.' The stand at the edge, staring at the land that follows the school. The houses slowly lessen as the bright skyscrapers of Loveland are the only buildings that catch their eye.

'Things were so much easier in high school.' she sighs, leaning against his shoulder. 'The way things are changing, it can be overwhelming don't you think?'

He nods. 'But, is change bad?'

'If I'm with you.' she tilts her head up and meets his eye. 'I think I can handle it.'
