Yamaguchi glanced in the mirror again and smiled. Today was his first day of his second year of highschool and he was nothing but excited. He'd even put in effort over the summer by growing out his hair even longer. Yes, it got in the way but he figured out that putting it in a ponytail kept it up and off of his neck. This could be a great thing during volleyball games.
He shut off the light and walked downstairs to see his mother smiling. "Hey mom!"
"Good morning sweetheart. Tsukishima is out front waiting for you." She replied with a warm smile.
"Tsuki is here? That's great! Can you please tell him to wait a second? I've got him something." Yamaguchi replied and ran to his room. A moment later he burst down the stairs with his bookbag and another small bag. "Bye mom! I love you!"
"I love you too!" She called as he closed the door behind him.
"Wait. Okay, keys, bag, shoes, lunch. Good! I didn't forget anything!" He muttered. A blush of embarrassment spread over his face and he sighed. "I forgot you were standing there Tsuki. What's- are you okay?"
The blonde didn't answer, he just kept staring at the boy. Yamaguchi glanced behind him and then looked back up.
"Tsuki?"
"Your hair..." He whispered.
The smaller boy tensed and reached up at the ponytail. "I thought it would be cool to grow it out. It's kind of like Asahi's hair I guess... Do you like it?"
Tsukishima cleared his throat and shifted his bag. "You look fine." He answered, stealing another glance at the confused boy. "Stop looking at me like that. We're going to be late."
The blonde started to walk off, Yamaguchi running after him to keep up. "Hey! Do you want me to come over this afternoon?"
"That's fine."
"Hmm. Do you think Hinata has gotten any better at spiking? I heard that he practiced with Kageyama a lot over the break. Did you hear it too?"
"Yes. It doesn't matter though." Tsukishima replied blandly. He stuffed his hands into his pockets and glanced over at Yamaguchi. The boy gave him a broad smile and laughed.
"I've been working on some pretty cool serves lately! Maybe you can practice recieving when I come over?" He went on blabbering about his break and how amazing it had been, his eyes glued on the path ahead.
Tsukishima used this as a way to look at the ponytail hanging loosely from the boy's head. It looked so soft and the way his hair fell framed his face perfectly.
"Eh do I have something on my face?"
"No. Shut up."
"Sorry Tsuki."
"Stop saying sorry to me."
"Why?"
Tsukishima shifted his bag. "Because I said not to." He took his headphones from around his neck and placed them on Yamaguchi's head.
"Ooh." Yamaguchi smilled. "You've been listening to some really pretty songs lately Tsuki. Which one is this?"
"I don't know." In all honesty, he didn't know. He'd pulled together a bunch of songs in a specific playlist meant just for Yamaguchi. They had similar music tastes but he was always made sure the better songs were in that playlist.
He'd started making it in their middle school years at first to delay panic attacks for the younger boy. Or to calm him down. Then they started to sleep over each other's houses and Tsukishima added songs that would make it easier for him to fall asleep. Now it was still for panic attacks but now he just gave over his headphones to see Yamaguchi smile.
And how often that happened was adorable.
"Hey Tsuki do you want the thing I got you?" Yamaguchi questioned quiety, his voice sounding hesitant.
Tsukishima shrugged. "Alright."
Yamaguchi pulled out a small package and handed it over. "I hope you like it."
Tsukishima undid the blue wrapping carefully, silent. Then he pulled out the little dinosaur figurine and faintly smiled. "wow."
"As in like, sarcastic wow or you like it wow?"
"It's alright."
Yamaguchi immediately knew that meant he liked it and smiled wider. "Great! This one's green instead of red or yellow like the others."
Tsukishima put it back in his box and nodded. He loooked back at Yamaguchi and saw his ponytail loosening. "Stop walking for a second."
He stopped walking. "What? Why?"
"Your hair is coming out of the holder." He took it out and it went down a little bit past his shoulders. Tsukishima ran his fingers through his hair a few times, stunned. He'd never seen it so long before. It loooked amazing.
"You done?"
Tsukishima fixed his hair. "There."
"Thanks!"
"Mm." Tsukishima double checked that it was tight. Yamaguchi looked at him and smiled.
"Cool, isn't it?"
"If it's what you like."
"I mean I do like it. But um... you seem to like it a lot more. You're getting awfully close to my face now..." Yamaguchi blushed as Tsukishima stared.
"I like it."
"T-that's great."
Tsukishima kissed his forehead gently. "We don't need to be a secret anymore, okay?"
"O-okay! Great! That's great!"
Tsukishima smiled. "Your hair is nice this length."
Yamaguchi laughed quietly. "Hinata's literally walking up on us and you kissed my head. You have no shame, do you?"
"Absolutely none. There's no point in it." Tsukishima grabbed his hand and kept walking. "Ignore the idiots behind us."
Yamaguchi laughed. "Alrighty."
Behind them Hinata stared. "Oh wow. Yama grew out his hair..."
