Above: Alix and her eldest daughter Olga
The man lays me down on the soft feathered bed as the gripping pains in my stomach continue. "Make it stop." I say hoarsely and soaking wet from the rain. "Get a Fire going warm her up." The man says to Annika as he bends down to my level. "I'm going to help you alright? Just stay still." He puts a comforting hand on my shoulder as I stare into his face, A million different faces morph into his, Good and bad. Nikki, Aloysha, Kerensky. All of them forming into his face. "Get the woman some clothes before she freezes to death." He orders And Annika scurries out of the room. As I look down at my dress i see it soaked with blood. "Please God have mercy on us." I whisper knowing that this child is the last piece I have of Nikki. The man puts a piece of cloth to my face and I feel myself drifting off into that wonderful golden world again, I fight it all I can, I don't trust this man. I don't him, I have no idea what he'll do to me while I'm asleep, But eventually I succumb. Half-Awake I feel enormous pressure on my stomach but it doesn't hurt, As I see figures drifting out from time and space. Olga, In a beautiful white dress with a baby in her arms. My poor Olya, She never got the chance to have one. The thought saddened me until Tatya appeared with a crown on her head looking every inch a queen. Just what me and Nikki and me wanted for her, To be a Queen. Then she too faded into the mist and Mashona appeared before me, Standing Tall by herself, This struck me as odd. She seemed to have always had crushes on sailors and such but now she was standing alone and Tall. Pride bubbled up in me in my half awake state. But she too faded, And Nastya stepped forward into the light, With her hair tied up magnificently and her posture straight in the new fashions of the day, She looked powerful with no one to accompany her, She could take care of herself. Yet another one of my girls faded into the most, The last one. But my boy came forward, Standing Tall, Not afraid time be standing as he walked up to a throne a girl waiting by his side to be crowned next to him, I knew who she was, A cousin of Aloyshas who he had always fancied. The beautiful scenes that were unfolding in front of me disappeared for the last time as I slipped into full unconsciousness. When I awoke I was no longer soaking wet, I felt warm and the rain was coming down in a steady pace. For the first time I felt safe. I turned my body and groaned for the soreness in my body. When I turned my head I saw the man sitting in front of the fireplace throwing shells of nuts into the fire like he hadn't just done god knows what. "Who are you?" I ask hoarsely my damp hair spread out on pillow like a halo. "You're awake, How do you feel?" He asked gently and walked over to me putting his hand on my shoulder comfortingly. I pull away making a face at him "What did you do to me?" I ask as bravely as I can. "I saved your baby. Don't I get a thank you?" He smiles charmingly at me. Who did he think he was? I was in great pain and here he was thinking of me being in his debt. "Thank you." I said hoarsely rolling over my side with a groan. "When can I walk?" I ask, Knowing I need to get out of here and find my daughter. "About a week?" He said sitting back down at the fire again. "A week? No, I don't have that kind of time." I say turning my head away from him at the fire. "What's your hurry?" He asked lazily turning his eyes to me. "I need to find someone." I say carefully "I'll crawl out of here if I need too." At this he laughs "Crawling didn't go to well for you the last time." My face contorted in rage and anger. "Go away, I don't even know you." He knows nothing about me or what the hell I have been through these past weeks. "As you wish madam." He smiles at me and bows out of the room, A reminder of how life used to be.
A week later just as the man had said I was able to walk again. As we stand outside with the sunshine beating down on us I hug Annika, "Thank you really, For everything." I smile, She was kind enough to help me put my hair up and give me a new dress that day. "Of course dear I hope we can meet again." She gives me a small smile as I walk down the road determined to find my daughter. Little did I know, Who I would run into down the road.
