I've always heard girls say how they wondered what being a guy was like. I've never had to wonder. I, Caroline Wright, am your typical tomboy. Who could blame me? My mom died when I was two and my father raised me all by himself, well technically he had a bit of help. He use to take me with him to the fire station until I was old enough to stay home alone. The guys there were great, it's like I had a whole group of dads. If I wasn't at the fire station, I'd be next door at my best friend Cole's house. Cole Thomson was the school's golden boy, Mr. Popular, and a middle child so he never got much attention growing up. So he found a friend in me and I a friend in him.

He had three older brothers and one younger one. The oldest was Daniel, he was happily married and with a beautiful baby girl. He was a good guy, he taught us all the basics of going into manhood since their father was never around. Their dad had a good accounting job in the big city, so he found it easier to just live there and visit here and then. He some how thought it was okay to send money instead of spending time with his children. Enough about him, back to the rest of the family. The second Thomson child is Alex, the family genius. He wants to be a successful lawyer, even though college was important to him he knew how to have fun. In third comes Zach, he's on a sports scholarship in college, he's the crazy one and the life of the party. As we grew older his brothers deemed us worthy enough to hang with them. Then there's Jimmy, he is the baby of the family and their obsession. They pampered him so much that he's become an annoying brat, cute, but none the less annoying.

Growing up with only male role models made me want to be a guy so badly, especially like Cole and his brothers. I wanted to dress like them, I wanted to act like them, I practically wanted to be them. I was so close to cutting my hair short but didn't because my father said I have my mother's hair, it was dumb but I wanted something to remember her by. It was wavy and went down to my waist, troublesome I know. It was a mix of different shades of brown, the majority was a light brown, sort of auburn, the other quarter was a darker brown shade and sometimes it would look like I have blond strands depending on the lighting. That was the only pretty thing about me, I wasn't much of a looker. I had my dad's plain blue eyes and light freckles, I was of average height, my figure... well I don't know. People have mistaken me for a guy multiple times so I'm guessing non existent. But then my clothing style didn't do much to help, yup I was the girl in the baggy band tshirts and jeans and sneakers. Don't forget my hats, I had an obsession for them. Beanies, snapbacks and baseball caps.

"Earth to nerd, do you copy?" said Cole through our walkie talkies. Yeah we went through the whole James bond phase thinking we were secret agents. Once we sprayed all our targets with our water guns we would have saved the world. This included our parents, Cole's brothers, our neighbours and any guests. Our guns "disappeared" that summer but I knew Cole's mom had hid them somewhere.

I looked Cole through my window, there was enough distance between the houses that we couldn't jump through each others windows, but some genius conveniently grew a big oak tree with branches long and strong enough for use to sneak into each others rooms. It was perfect for when our parent's wouldn't let us sleepover. They found out obviously and my dad built us a safer way to climb the tree by sticking a few steady wooden boards.

I scrunched up my nose at him in disgust which he replies by teasingly pushing up his invisible glasses from the tip to his nose to the bridge. I had these dinosaur glasses that I wouldn't be caught dead wearing in public. Of course Cole had seen me in them and made sure to make fun of me every time.

"No one can look as hot as me in these glasses," I said while leaning against the window sill.

"Of course, they really complement your eyes," he teased. "But they would look better on me anyways."
