Ever since Violet had arrived at the burrow over the holidays, a part of me has been looking forward to going back to Hogwarts in hopes that it would be easier to catch a break from the drama that seems to follow wherever she goes. The moment that Pansy had announced that the first party of the semester will take place this very evening, it became crystal clear that peace and quiet are about the only two things that aren't up for grabs no matter how many walls I put between us.
Pansy leaves the dorm as soon as she's ready to prepare the last arrangements for the pre-party that she has once again poured her heart and soul into. I'm left by myself in our dorm that is dead quiet and for the first time in weeks, I know that I have the luxury of complete privacy even if it's only for a few minutes, and the only sound that can be heard is the faint pattern of my breathing.
Despite being back at Hogwarts, everything still feels as out of balance and just as off as it had before we left the burrow. It's as if there is a constant shadow hanging over me that follows me even in the dark, that reminds me every now and then that something is going to go terribly wrong without giving me the slightest clue when it will all fall apart.
After soaking up the peaceful sound of silence for a few minutes, I force myself to leave the dorm behind to join the others in the common room. Everyone seems to be in a good mood and since most people have been spending the holidays with their families, the company of friends is long overdue. The conversation drifts between topics that change every other minute, while bottles of Dragon Barrel Brandy are passed around. By the time we leave for the actual party, we have emptied all of the bottles that had been brought to the common room at the beginning of the evening and there is not a single sober thought that follows as we walk through the castle.
If sneaking around the halls at night without getting caught had been a tricky thing to do by myself or with Fred as my only company, making it halfway across the castle in a group of multiple people makes it no less of a challenge. Once we arrive by the entrance to the Ravenclaw common room, the conversation comes to an end and we all stand and stare right ahead of us. In the middle of the rather grand door is a large and beautiful bronze coloured door knocker shaped like the head of an eagle, being the only detail on the door in front of us that has neither a keyhole nor a doorknob.
"So, who's got the password?" Blaise says and looks around at everyone with his eyebrows raised questioningly.
"There isn't one, remember?" Pansy says and rolls her eyes, "They use riddles and those sort of things"
Everyone becomes so quiet that it is almost possible to hear just how close we're listening, as the eagle head on the door begins to tell the riddle that will determine whether we get in or not.
"It can't be seen, can't be felt,
Can't be heard, and can't be smelt
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, and kills laughter""Darkness" Draco answers shortly without wasting a second to let anyone else voice an idea.
The door opens in front of us yet not a sound comes from the inside of the common room as if there is a shield to keep the sound inside, which makes it clear that some form of silencing charm has been cast over the common room.
