When Dumbledore steps down from the podium and the hall fills with voices and laughter again, everything turns into a distant kind of blur as my mind is racing so fast that I can barely keep up with my own thoughts.

Why is she here? Did she shift here too? Is it really Alice, or have I gone mad?

I can't take my eyes away from her as she walks in the same gracious, effortless way as she did before over to the table where she's greeted with excitement by the other Hufflepuffs. She hasn't noticed me yet and I wonder if she knows that I'm here, or if she will be just as surprised as I am.

"So, when is the party?" Blaise says and turns to Pansy with a smirk.

"What party?" I ask and look at them in confusion as I'm pulled away from my thoughts.

"The party that we throw to find out who she is and why she's here" Pansy answers. "It's Friday tomorrow so that would work out alright, I'd say the sooner the better"

"That's quite ambitious, we would have less than twenty-four hours to set everything up" Theo says and looks over at her skeptically.

"Oh Theodore, you underestimate my party planning-skills" she says with a teasing smile, and with that sentence the decision seems to be made. "First and foremost, we need to invite our guest of honour and see what she's like"

"No thanks" Theo says and laughs at the idea.

"Say hi to your little Hufflepuff friend for me" Blaise adds sarcastically.

Pansy rolls her eyes at the two of them in response before her and I get up to make our way across the hall towards the table where Alice is sitting with the other Hufflepuffs in our year. It's as if there is some kind of error in my mind that interrupts all of my thoughts before I get to think them. It doesn't make things easier when I try to come up with different explanations for how this happened, each as unlikely as the next.

As we approach the group of Hufflepuff students, my heart is pounding along with the ringing in my ears from the anxiety that's spreading through every nerve in my body. She's not supposed to know that I'm here, but now she is, too.

I try to recall every moment that I had spent with Alice during the weeks before I shifted in a desperate attempt to remember when I might have told her about all of this. I must have told her. Out of all the impossible and irrational explanations, that is the only one that comes close to making sense. Eventually, I decide to settle on the theory that I told Alice that I was shifting and now she had done the same thing.

I still haven't pulled myself together when we arrive at the table and when I try to come up with something to say, there's only one word that comes to my mind.

"Alice?" I say and stare at her.

"I'm sorry, you are?" she says and looks up at me with a radiant smile.

"What? Uhm... Nova Drewitt" I stutter without taking my eyes away from her.

"Lovely to meet you Nova, I'm Violet" she says and reaches out her hand, "Violet Cain"

"Are you sure?" I blurt out before I can stop myself.

She glances around at the other students at the table, who all look as if they're trying to restrain their laughter and even Pansy is looking at me as if I've completely lost it.

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's my name, I guess it's a good thing you're pretty" Violet says with a condescending smile that makes her words come off as an innocent joke.
