It is usually a lot easier to hide from the truth than it is to confront the demons that make themselves at home inside your mind the more you lie to yourself. Sometimes, it doesn't even take a lie to forget what is real and what isn't. When time has finally outplayed you, having a choice suddenly looks like a one way street that leads to a dead end of ghosts from the past.
In the end, we all become stories and the only thing that matters is how much we have lived throughout our journey on our way to death. The people we loved, the things we did and the happiness we shared. Now that I am expecting the end where I am standing in the office where it all began, I know that I have at least tried my best and hopefully made some people a little bit happier than they would have been without me, even though they don't know it.
"Severus, the time has come" Dumbledore says with a tone that is not as secure and calm as it usually is, "If we are right, it cannot be kept in the dark any longer"
Snape presses his lips together in strained disbelief, standing still and clearly expressing that Dumbledore's words are not the ones he wanted to hear. Too scared to say anything and with my chest aching with a sharp anxiety, I look between the two as I wait for one of them to say something that actually makes sense.
"Your theory is bizarre Albus, it can't be-"
"Yes, it can" Dumbledore interrupts firmly.
His words are final and leave no opening for arguing. On the first day, they had asked questions about what I experienced when I was asleep before I came here and at the time, I didn't think too much of it. The concern had been brief and manageable, but whatever this is comes off as a lot more terrifying than that.
This is something that not even Snape is willing to accept, which says a lot. The wizarding world isn't known for being peaceful, but few things are so bad that it is something that people choose to completely deny. When Dumbledore turns to me, the expression on his face makes it clear that all the lies and made up stories have to come to an end.
"Miss Drewitt, if you would please tell me again what happened last year, when you were... asleep" he says calmly, "And I urge you to approach this with complete honesty, for everyone's sake and safety"
For months, I have lied to everyone including myself in hopes that whatever had bothered them in the beginning would be forgotten. Maybe this would not have had to happen if I had planned things out better and come up with better lies.
None of that matters now that the truth has caught up to me, but there are things I wouldn't change even if I got to do it all again. I have saved both Arthur, Sirius and Hogwarts as a whole from outcomes that no one would have appreciated.
This is no time for reminiscing, even though I would pause this moment if I could, just so I would get the chance to remember my favourite times before it all comes to an end. Both of them are turned to me with a kind of suspicion on their faces that backs me into a corner where I have no other choice.
"The things that I've known about weren't visions" I say hesitantly, "They were memories"
The confession is followed by a silence that is a heaviness shared between the three of us. While I wait for one of them to speak, I have to remind myself of how to breathe and prepare for the worst. I could try to hope for the best, but at this point I don't even know what that would be.
