The moment that my mind begins to drift out of my dreams back into a conscious state of mind, it comes as a bit of a surprise that I'm not waking up alone. The warmth from his skin against mine makes all the worries that have hovered over me throughout the night fade for a brief moment. Fred's arms are wrapped around me and he holds me like he always does in the mornings, but he's got me in a tighter grip than usual as if he's trying to make sure that no one can take me away from him, even if they tried.

It's not without difficulty that I turn around in his arms to face him, and he squeezes his eyes shut as if he's trying his hardest to keep the light out so that he can stay lost in his dreams. I bury my fingers in the flaming strands of his messy morning hair and scratch his head gently, which makes him give off a low, raspy groan before he blinks his eyes open to meet mine.

"Tired from staying up a little too late?" I say with a teasing smile, but as soon as the words have left my lips they remind me of the fact that I had fallen asleep by myself, not knowing where he had been.

"Something like that" he mumbles with a yawn.

"So, where were you last night?" I ask quietly while tracing his pale skin with my finger, drawing different shapes and patterns to distract my mind from exploring thoughts and going to places where I'd rather not be.

"I, uhm, George and I stayed up working pretty late" he says with a suddenly alert look in his eyes that are moving around nervously, as if he's trying to avoid looking into mine.

"No you weren't, he got back before I went to bed" I say quietly as my stomach turns into a knot at the thought of that Fred seems to be lying to me, "You were with her, weren't you?"

His gaze keeps flickering to buy him some more time to come up with an answer. I have no way of knowing if he does it because he's trying to figure out the best way to tell me the truth, or if he's going over a well rehearsed lie to make sure he makes it sound believable.

"It was nothing" he mumbles after a moment and wraps his arms even tighter around me as if he's afraid that I will suddenly decide to get up and leave.

"Why won't you tell me where you were? What did you do?" I ask hesitantly, and for a moment I'm not sure that I want to hear the answer.

"We were just talking, you've got nothing to worry about" he says calmly when his gorgeous hazel eyes finally meet mine, "You don't really think I would do anything to hurt you, do you?"

"What did you two have to talk about?" I ask almost obsessively, without considering that the jealousy in my words is not a good look.

Somehow, the look that he gives me unties the uncertainty in my mind and makes the aching in my chest ease, as if the way his eyes gaze into mine is a promise without words that doesn't need to be said out loud. Chances are that I'm stupid and mistaken that it's anything other than a winsome glance, but in this moment it's a risk that I'm willing to take.

"Like I said, it was nothing, we just lost track of time" he says, "Now, how about we take your mind off of her for a minute?"

He guides my lips up to his with two fingers under my chin, his other hand gently sliding down the soft skin over my back to the lower part of my body.

"You really know how to get yourself out of trouble, don't you?" I say through a faint sigh.

"I'm just keeping the promise I gave you yesterday" he mumbles onto my lips.
