The two figures were sitting on a bench in the quiet part of what people in this town would call a park. In reality, it was barely more than a few huddled trees with some grass fields in between. Coincidentally, it was also just next to the local orphanage.

From afar, the two looked like a young, embarrassed couple. Maybe they had just confessed to each other. Or maybe he had just asked her to marry him. Whatever it was, the were holding hands, both of them fixing their gazes on the small space that was left between them on the bench. Would any of the by passers dare to move closer though, they would realize that the woman looked upset, while the man was wearing a concerned scowl. Neither of them looked happy in the slightest. And if anyone would have the courage to sit beside them, they might have even been able to hear their hushed voices, talking back and forth rapidly.

“We can’t do this. We don’t ever do something like this.” The woman’s voice had an unexpected strength to it, even though it was barely audible and her face looked close to being graced by her tears.

The man shook his head slightly.

“I know that. But we have no choice. He will not survive.”

“He will! I know it.” Now, a minor quiver itched its way into her voice. Desperation.

“He will not. He is not healthy and it will lead to his death. The only chance he has got is to live in an appropriate environment.”

He silenced her upcoming argument with a single motion of his hand and then continued with a stern voice that had an unmistakable finality to it.

“And it is not ours.”

His eyes fixed on hers for all of a few minutes, not wavering for even a second. Then, he stood up, effectively pulling her with him.

A few feet away the woman stopped.

“I want to call him only once.” and this time, it was her that silenced him with a single look. Her eyes fell to the ground as she continued to walk again, pulling him along.

The whisper only he heard, yet it was not addressed to him.

“Goodbye... Matthew.”

The only thing left on the bench was a small bundle of sheets, quiet breaths audible from it to whoever chose to walk close enough to hear.
