"I know you're in here," said that familiar, deep I couldn't seem to get away from.I rose up from behind the desk I was hiding behind to find him standing a few feet away eying me, quietly.
"Are you following me?" I asked, suspiciously.
Releasing a hearty laugh, he walked towards me slowly, unsure of how to approach me. After weighing my options in my head I decided there was no use in running away and stood my ground waiting for him to approach me.
"I go on runs sometimes to clear my head. How about you?"
"Same as you, minus the running," I answered vaguely.
"Are you going to tell me your name or run away again?" he replied with a serious gaze on his face.
"Saron."
"Why did you run away from me in the Cafeteria?" he asked, hurt in his eyes.
"I- I was hungry. I don't like to talk when I'm hungry." I was hungry? Really? I couldn't come up with a better excuse. What was it about him that made me so hot and flustered?
Clearing my throat, I changed the subject by asking, "What's your name?"
"Zion."
"and what kind of hybrid are you?"
"How do you know I'm a hybrid?" he asked, narrowing his eyes at me as he stepped forward.
Shit. What do I do now?!
I backed away, averting my gaze to the ground to avoid his fierce gaze as I thought up an excuse.
"I didn't see you with any of the other groups so I assumed. Star, my friend told me about the hybrids," I answered quickly.
"You know, you're a horrible liar."
My eyes shot up and I glared angrily at him before replying, "You don't know me."
"I know you're lying to your friend."
My eyes widened in shock, rendered speechless by his words. What did he mean? He couldn't possibly know. How could he? Stay cool, Saron. He's bluffing, that's what boys do.
"I don't know what you're talking about," I replied calmly, maintaining his gaze before walking past him to return back.
As I passed him, he grabbed my wrist stopping me in my tracks causing me to stumble. He instinctively placed his hand on my lower back steadying me. I suddenly felt myself being whooshed into a distant memory.
"Father!" cried out a young boy, giggling happily as he began waddling towards his father who had just entered the house.
"Zion, my boy!" an older gentleman with brown hair and thick rimmed glasses exclaimed while bending down to scoop up the excited toddler.
"Careful Jacob, you'll drop him," rang out a voice from an older woman seated on a nearby couch knitting.
"Mommy, mommy daddy's home!" Zion cooed cupping his fathers face in his hands lovingly.
"JACOB!" the woman screamed in terror.
The child was suddenly dropped to the ground as the elder man collapsed beside him, a pool of blood forming around him. A hooded figure emerged from behind him with the man's heart clenched between his fingers. He dropped the heart on the ground and stepped towards the woman ignoring the cries of the child screaming. The woman backed away, frightened, eying the door. Taking a bold leap forward towards the exit, she also fell to the ground as the man removed her heart from her chest with one fell swoop. The bodies of the man and the woman lay on the ground lifeless in mere seconds with their hearts detached near them as the child cried and screamed for them. The hooded man grabbed the child with one hand and walked out of the house, the child struggling in his grasp, face wet from tears.
