Chapter Three: A Strange Encounter

"Come quickly! At this rate we'll be late for the World Coronation Series!" Goh yelled, panicking as he ran to the stadium.

"Er... I-if you'd like, you can use my Galarian Moltres, Zapdos and Articuno to get there. I've just got to..." mumbled Y/N. 

She was a rather skilled inventor, and she had invented a machine to extend the number of Pokemon you could carry. She quickly took it out, and began to fiddle with it.

"What's that?" Ash asked, interested.

"Oh! I-it really isn't anything..." she stuttered, a little startled by his sudden appearance.

"Let Y/N finish." said Goh, pulling Ash away. "She could actually get us there in five minutes if you would just leave her be!"

"Sorry." grinned Ash sheepishly.

Y/N had finished her arrangements. She started the machine, and three Pokeballs appeared. 

"I'm done. You can choose one. That is...if you like." Her voice was shy and timid. "I-I would prefer the Articuno, thank you..."

"Go ahead!" smiled Ash. "They are your Pokemon."

Y/N selected an Articuno, Goh a Moltres and Ash a Zapdos.

"This is amazing! Aren't they supposed to be rare?" questioned Goh, awed all the same.

"W-well, they are..." faltered Y/N.

"Your Pokemon sure are fast! We've made it already!" said Ash, climbing off his Zapdos. "It was awesome!"

The threesome slid through the door and dashed up to their seats, waiting for the trainers to appear. The commentator yelled Leon's name out loud, and everyone cheered. He called Lance's name aloud, and they cheered once more.

All except for Y/N, that is.

She was the Champion of Galar, the one who had defeated Leon countless ti N es, the one who won every World Coronation Series she entered. She found nothing very remarkable about Leon after this.

She saw the Pokemon battle fiercely, still bored out of her wits at this battle. She knew she could do a much better job, but that was not on her mind currently. Her attention was shifted to her watch, which was telling her that Zacian was in Hammerlocke Stadium as they battled. She looked around. Surely a Pokemon as large as itself couldn't hide that easily! 

She saw Lance's Shiny Gyarados fall to the ground, the commentator declaring Leon the victor. Well, that was to be expected.

Outside, the boys were still rambling on and on about how incredible Leon was. She felt quite the opposite of what the boys felt. Disappointed and beleaguered, she could not share their enthusiasm and exhilaration.

Out of the blue, she spotted an Eevee trotting around a bush. She suddenly felt excited once more. An Eevee! Oh joy! She would finally have a Gigantamaxed Eevee of her own. She could also finally use her Eevium Z now. Or at least, until it evolved. The Eevee suddenly spotted a wild Nickit, which was looking rather belligerent. With a slash from Eevee, it fell to the ground, Eevee feeling triumphant.

Y/N smiled. This Eevee would be a wonderful addition to her team! She crouched down near it. It immediately understood, and stood, poised for battle. Y/N knew what this meant: if she could beat it, it would join her gladly. She decided to choose her Articuno for this one.

"Let's start with tour signature move, Freezing Glare!" 

A beam of intense purple light hit Eevee, who was now immobilised. Y/N threw her Pokeball. The ball moved a little before stopping.

"It is nice to have an Eevee at last." she said to herself.

"Hey - Y/N!" yelled an over-enthusiastic boy.

"Oh - hi Ash, Goh." she said, slightly bemused.

"Y/N, you've got to come quick! There's a Gigantamaxed Drednaw on the loose! You're the only one who knows about the Gigantamax and Dynamax phenomenon. Quickly!" cried Goh, his voice desperate.

A thought suddenly formed in Y/N's head.

Oh no, is it my fault? Eternatus is the core of the Gigantamax and Dynamax phenomenon, so did I do this?

She shook the thought out of her head.

No, Y/N, you have to help them.

She nodded deftly to the boys, and they ran to where Drednaw was.

"Right, Ash, I'll distract it, while you and Goh battle it. It should return back to its normal size once you've defeated it." she said, her voice now full of authority.

The boys nod.

"Hey, Y/N?" Ash held her wrist before she left. "Be careful."

"Oh, I'm always careful." she replied matter-of-factly. "Based on what I've heard from Goh, it's you who should be careful."

He grinned good naturedly, and Y/N ran over to Drednaw.

"Articuno!" she said, sliding onto its back. "Could you fly me on top of Drednaw's back?"

It nodded in response, and promptly flew her above Drednaw's back.

"Thank you!" she beamed. "Right." Her expression was solemn.

Drednaw sensed a presence on its back - Y/N!

"Goh, we've got to attack now! We can't let it attack Y/N!" Ash cried.

"You're right! Scorbunny, Double Kick!" The move had no effect on Drednaw.

"Hurry! I don't think I can hold on much longer!" Y/N yelled, holding on for dear life. 

Her fingers began to slip, as Y/N began to panic. Oh no, was she going to die? She didn't want to die this early! She felt herself falling through the air, Ash's yells of horror muffling her thoughts.

This is it, she thought. This is how I'm going to die.

Suddenly, a pair of slender but strong arms caught her swiftly. She gazed into his eyes, which were a nice shade of emerald green, as Goh and Ash successfully defeated Drednaw

"We really do have to stop meeting each other in accidents, you know." He smiled at her.

"Oh! Um..." Her cheeks began to heat up.

"That reminds me, have I asked for your name?"

Y/N shook her head,

"I-I'm Y/N. Y/N L/N. I'm travelling with Ash and Goh." Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"I'm Gladion. Gladion Aether. I trust you know my sister?"

"I-I do." she stuttered.

"Say, about that Ash you were talking about, is his full name Ash Ketchum by any chance?" he asked, his eyes still staring at hers.

"W-why yes! I'll go get him now."

Abashed from her conversation with Gladion, she waved to Ash.

"Is that your friend Ash?" she asked, motioning to Gladion.

"He is! Long time no see, Gladion! This is Y/N!" grinned Ash.

The one I've fallen in love with, he thought.
