Now that they were alone, Mizuka took a warm washcloth and cleaned her face gently.
"Why am I here?"
The woman watched her, her eyes full of interest.
"Because Iruka didn't think you wanted to die. Your wounds didn't appear to be self inflicted."
Haru closed her eyes as hot tears began to fall down the sides of her face. She was so close to the nightmare being over, and, for the first time in her life, someone saved her. At the wrong damn time. And now she would have to return to the island. And to him. The pink haired woman scooted closer.
"Where are you from?"
She squeezed her eyes shut tighter. She would never tell.
"You don't have to tell me. Like I said, I'm just trying to help. You appear to be in trouble."
"I wouldn't be anymore if he had let me die in the forest."
The woman sighed deeply as she stood up.
" You're under no obligation to stay here. However, it would probably be in your best interest to stay here a while longer. Your body is still very weak and your arm is broken, your nose is broken, your ribs are broken, and your skull and hip are fractured."
The healer ticked the list off on her fingers.
"Like I said, though, you are not obligated to stay."
She left the room, leaving Haru alone again. This was her chance, before anyone contacted Ryujin. She quickly pulled the IV out of her arm and the tube from her nose before swinging her legs around the side of the bed and standing. Every part of her body was throbbing, but that wasn't important right now. She wasn't a stranger to pain. Her left leg barely caught her. However...
She had to leave.
Now.
Realizing she was on the first floor, she clumsily opened the window and began to climb out, falling the rest of the way out and into the bushes , landing on her bandaged arm. Her left hip ground against the bone painfully. The pain was so intense that her vision turned black for a moment.
She scrambled to her feet and began to limp as fast as she could. Looking down, she realized that she had no shoes on and she was still wearing a white hospital gown. She hadn't run for many years, so she thought she was running.
Was this what running felt like? She couldn't remember.
People were looking at her as she ran down the street, frantically trying to find the exit. Her arm felt wet and warm where the IV had been inserted as it swung awkwardly out of sync with the bandaged, broken one.
She rounded a corner after what felt like an eternity and spotted what appeared to be the gates. She was free. That was, before a searing pain began at the bottom of her right foot, making her fall forward violently. She felt her head bounce off of the dirt road as her vision blackened.
"Miss! Miss!"
Her vision finally returned, but everything felt like a dream. Two men were kneeling over her, looking concerned.
"She's bleeding badly."
"It looks like she came from the hospital. Come on, we have to get her back."
The blonde man moved in closer.
"I'm going to pick you up and take you to the hospital, okay?"
"No...no..."
