*This was inspired by a promt my English teacher gave my class. She asked us to write a sentence in active voice about someone jumping over a puddle and this is what it turned into.*
Alice jumped over the puddle of water in the middle of the sidewalk, her dark hair whipping back in the breeze, the heels of her boots dipped into the puddle and became damp with fallen rain. Luckily, Alice had managed to avoid the puddle enough that the rest of her boots weren't soaked and for that she was grateful. The light autumn breeze whispered past her face as she walked, as if it were talking to her. She hated it. She hated autumn. It had always seemed such a sinister season, the way the leaves fell to the ground and were crushed underfoot, the way everything turned brown and died. Alice had always felt like this but since last year she hated the season even more. Last year, as autumn took the flowers and the leaves, it took Alfred from her too. Her dear white rabbit, like a leaf, falling and falling until he was crushed under autumns unforgiving shoes. The autumn breeze seemed to taunt her as if she were a child and it had just taken her favorite toy. "Oh you want this? Too bad, it's mine now!" Alice shook her head slightly as if telling the wind to go away and tightened her grip on the flowers she held in her right hand. She wasn't far from her destination, in fact she could see it up ahead, but she suddenly felt so far away. She couldn't feel her legs moving yet she walked closer to the tombstone until she was close enough to touch it. She took a shaky breath and spoke.
"Hi Alfred"
She knelt down and laid the flowers on the grave reading his name on the tombstone as she did. Again she spoke.
"It's been raining a lot lately hasn't it?" she asked the tombstone. "I've been writing. You see I'm writing a book about you, about us. About wonderland. When it's finished, I'll bring it here and I'll read it to you. Would you like that?" She asked, brushing her fingers against the tombstone. "I could recite our book of wonder if you'd like." Alice said. "I know you won't start what you can't finish, so it's good I've memorized the whole book." She laughed. Alice sat down and leaned against the grave. "Chapter one" She stated. "Down the rabbit hole"
As the sky grew gray and cloudy Alice recited the last few lines of the book. She pressed a kiss to her fingertips and touched the grave. "My dear white rabbit...my Alfred" She stood up and turned to go. She turned back to the grave "I'll come back when I finish writing my book, I promise" The sun dipped beneath the horizon as Alice walked home, feeling as though perhaps autumn wasn't as bad as she'd always thought.
*I've re-written this twice so if it's still bad at least it's better than it was. :)*
