EYES OPEN OR closed, it would have made no difference to Zach. The blaring red school bell hoisted high upon the classroom wall was a definite annoyance all the same.
Due to the blindness instated in Zach's faded, unfocused blue eyes, the teenager believed his hearing was reinforced. It would make complete sense that someone possessing only four senses rather than five required the remaining ones to take over for the attribute absent.
In the moment of the rather bothersome screech of the alarm, Zach wished that would not be the case for him.
He did not need his unseeing eyes to notice the swarm of his peers fighting a losing battle to reach the classroom's exit first. Zach could practically imagine his AP Biology teacher, Mrs. Atwood, hurriedly addressing the class with a bit of franticness in her tone.
"Alright, class," the blonde woman exclaimed over the hustle and bustle of teenagers. "Since this is your first day, you will have no homework. Don't expect that from me all the time, though."
It seemed as if a thousand groans and sighs of disappointment from his peers over having homework in the near future overpowered the absence of it altogether for Zach. He was unsure about all of his new classmates, but Zach knew for himself he was relieved with the announcement of no homework for that particular Monday, the most dreaded day of the week.
Mrs. Atwood was quick to regain authority of her classroom after her students temporarily snatched it away from her. "What are you all waiting for? You have a class in five minutes. Shoo!"
Zach remained at his desk while suppressing a laugh due to his teacher's calm and amusing demeanor, listening to the morning rush of his peers. As they all slammed their heavy, hardcover textbooks shut, he carefully closed his laptop. Rather than delving into the impossible task of reading a textbook while lacking the ability to see his hand in front of his face, Zach used a laptop he was familiar with to take notes of the lectures.
After being homeschooled for all his life, Zach had no idea what to expect. Succeeding to the first bell of the day startled him out of his skin, he knew there would be plenty more surprises in store for him. He had never attended a single class with other students before, however Zach was mysteriously calm.
Maybe his blindness helped him a bit—keeping him in his own little world rather than surrounded by several teenagers who did not possess the ability to care less.
Unfortunately, Zach's condition came with several downsides along with the few upsides. Over the past hour during his AP Biology lecture, Mrs. Atwood was interrogated by about three students over why Zach was able to use a laptop while for other students, it was prohibited.
