Chapter 23 | ❝ Thanks for listening. ❞

Tuesday, November 6th, 2018 - 5:17 p.m.

DUDE, I CAN'T believe your procedure is just a week away!" Harper exclaimed cheerfully through the phone.

Zach let out an amused exhale due to his friend's announcement. "Yeah, I know," he replied with almost as much enthusiasm. "And to think I thought it'd take forever to get here."

"Aren't you excited? I'd be bouncing off the walls if I were in your place!"

"Of course I'm looking forward to it," he clarified, moving so he was laying on his stomach on his bed. "I'm just a bit nervous."

Harper's tone became a more compassionate one. "You're gonna do great." he assured him. "Either way, if it doesn't work the first time, they can always do it again, right?"

"Yeah, but wouldn't you be nervous if there was a life changing surgery available to you that you were going to get and you desperately wanted it to work, but then it turns out it doesn't and never will no matter how many times you try it?" Zach began to anxiously ramble.

"Yes, I would be nervous, but you don't know that it won't work," Harper reasoned. "They wouldn't tell you it was a valid option if there was a hundred percent chance it won't work."

"That's true.."

"You can trust me on this. Okay?"

Zach was slightly hesitant due to the situation at hand. His mind continued to replay every possible situation where things went wrong. "...Okay."

"Let me know if you need anything. Alright?"

"I will. Thank you." Zach nodded even though Harper was unable to see it.

Harper's smile was easily heard through his voice. "Not a problem at all! See you tomorrow in Biology."

"See you then," he confirmed, waiting until the quiet beeps signalling his friend had hung up before switching his phone off and setting it on the table near his bed.

Zach adjusted his position on his comfortable bed so he was facing the ceiling and resting his head upon his fluffy pillow. He listened as the blades of the ceiling fan overhead spun at a moderate tempo. It was a rather soothing sound to hear, yet it became boring and dull at the same time. Zach wished he was able to watch a television show, or even the view outside his window to help cure his aching nervousness.

The teenager had completed the majority of his homework for the weekend so he had time to relax, however that might not have been the best thing for him to do at the moment. Instead, his thoughts were plaguing the anxious mind of Zach's, so much so that he felt uneasy simply with the concept of letting himself think altogether.
