Chapter 9 | ❝ I hate that stupid leather jacket. ❞

Thursday, September 13th, 2018 - 5:47 p.m.

KELSEY TURNED THE knob to her car radio's volume towards the right a couple notches. Music began to fill her ears almost as much as her thoughts. She had just dropped Zach off at his home after spending at least half an hour simply sitting on the pier and having a normal conversation with someone who was interested in her feelings.

She smiled as she remembered Hayleigh's bright green eyes from about a minute ago. The eight-year-old girl appeared ecstatic to see Kelsey once again, even if it was less than two hours prior when she arrived in the first place. It seemed as if everyone in the West family had a contagious smile and they were a picture perfect lifestyle. Kelsey's family was far from different, but there was something different about Zach and his family.

Optimism was prevalent in Zach's personality as well as Hayleigh's. The world was not all sunshine and rainbows, but it was not completely stormy and miserable either. There was a median between the two, and Zach rested upon that particular line. He was simply the little ray of sunshine hoping to spread at least a little bit of positivity in the world.

Kelsey had not realized how gloomy the world was once the clouds parted and she was shown the concealed sunlight.

She placed her foot on the gas pedal of her car, propelling it forward a few blocks to her own residence on Huntington Avenue. Even though it was a short car journey, Kelsey made the most of it by putting on her favorite radio station to listen to at a loud volume. Kelsey rarely had the vehicle to herself due to carpooling several of her friends from their homes to school and vice versa on the daily.

19 Huntington Avenue came into view in a matter of minutes. Kelsey steered her car into the driveway, parking it next to her parents' vehicle. She switched her Chevrolet off, grabbed her keys, and exited the car, her purse in hand. She locked the car with a beep. The headlights flashed for a split second before the vehicle transitioned into a void of silence.

Kelsey's blonde hair whisked behind her as she walked towards the entrance of her home. The air around her was cool, a perfect temperature for the soon to be setting sun. She stepped onto the porch and unlocked the front door. Once she stepped inside, she was instantly met with the voice of her mother.

"Hi, Kelsey!" Mrs. Davis happily greeted her daughter. "You're just in time for dinner—I made fried chicken!"

Kelsey smiled as she shut the front door behind her. "Awesome! I love your fried chicken."

Mr. Davis was sitting down on the sofa watching something on television. Uno was next to him, sound asleep. The snores emitting from him were much too large for such a small dachshund. As Kelsey stepped into the living room, Uno perked up and began barking in excitement.
