Chapter 11 | ❝ So, you're in? ❞

Monday, September 17th, 2018 - 11:59 a.m.

LYLA SMILED GLEEFULLY to herself as she whirled away from the Literature classroom's door and began walking down the hallway once more. Despite anyone's expectations of her footwear due to being a "popular" person of Oceanview High, Lyla's pink Vans slapped against the tiled floor rather than heels would click.

Her small stature made it easy for her to weave around any lingering people who were either talking to others, rushing to class, or choosing to ditch. Lyla would have most likely been amongst the third option. She pulled her iPhone X out of her pocket, laced her dainty fingers around it, and decided to check her various social media accounts as she walked down the halls. Lyla had memorized the halls years prior. She did not need to give the world a glance from her virtual world.

She adjusted the way her pure white cardigan rested upon her shoulders in a way of which her body would be framed beautifully. Lyla was a gorgeous girl with all of the desired beauty standards everyone could have wanted. She might not have known it, but she chose to embrace it the best as she was able. Lyla never once mentioned her beauty. Just like other females in her age range, she was, as surprising as it would have sounded, insecure.

Lyla skidded to the right and into her US History classroom. She spotted a familiar face with blond hair and an undercut topped off with a black leather jacket near the back of the classroom. Her automatic smile grew at the sight of her friend, Jaylen, who accompanied her in such a boring class. Without hesitation, she headed over towards the tall male in the corner.

She plopped down in her desk, letting her feet dangle about an inch above the ground. "Hi, Jaylen."

"Afternoon, Lyla," Jaylen greeted her with a blank expression. Boredom was clear in his face as he waited for US History to begin.

Lyla eyed his complexion. "Are you bored?" When he nodded, the innocence in her face quickly vanished. "Wanna skip? Mr. Jones is always late to this class anyway."

Jaylen's brown eyes flickered towards the front of the classroom. Upon seeing that Mr. Jones was indeed late once again, he looked back at Lyla. Wordlessly, he shrugged and collected his things off of his desk. Lyla beamed, standing up from her own. She did not want to attend US History in the first place.

Once the duo checked if the coast was clear of any Mr. Joneses, the two of them began walking down the hall. This was something the two did at least once a week. Ever since Jaylen and Lyla compared schedules on the first day of school and discovered they shared a couple of classes, they chose to skip one of them for an extra long lunch break.

The halls quickly grew silent. Hardly a student was visible in the hallways which were so quiet, you could hear a pin drop other than the two pairs of footsteps passing by. Lyla's eyes darted around to each nook and cranny of the hall of which she and Jaylen occupied. Once she deemed it safe, she chose to begin talking.
