Chapter 14 | ❝ Boo! ❞
Monday, November 26th, 2018 - 2:56 p.m.
ZACH LET OUT another fatigued yawn when he stood up from his desk in his Geography classroom. His tired nature was more so than usual, and Zach found himself surprisingly not wanting to sleep for once. He used to love it, but since his dream occurred for the first time in months, Zach discovered a growing hatred for it.
He did not let his exhaustion distract himself from classes for the entire day. School and friends were much more important than silly dreams he was having at night. Even though they caused a delay in his sleep pattern, he figured that was his "night self's" problem, not his current.
He left the classroom as quick as a whistle and caught up with his friends, who were grouped together near a wall of lockers. Kelsey, Harper, Mason, and August were speaking about nothing in particular, and when they saw Zach, they eagerly called him over. Zach did exactly that and jogged over to the small group. It was a joy to him to see his friends.
"Hey, Zach!" Harper exclaimed cheerfully. "Mason, August, and I were planning on going to the beach. Kelsey said she might. Did you want to go with us?"
Zach was about to eagerly say he would love to, but then frowned at a sudden realization. "I can't. I have detention again today."
"Oh, that's right." Harper was disappointed by the reminder. "How about we go play sometime when you're done with this detention mess. Maybe like an after-school hangout."
"That sounds fun!"
"I'll stay in the library," Kelsey insisted to Zach's surprise. When Zach was about to question it, she explained, "You need a ride home, don't you?"
"I do, but I could always text my mom to come get me. I'll have to be there for an hour," he replied with a bit of guilt due to her offer.
Kelsey smiled in contrast to Zach's expectation. "I don't mind. I like the library."
"Are you sure?"
"Positive."
"Alright then. It looks like we've got an hour to kill," Zach announced with a nonchalant shrug. He did not want to go to detention, but he had no choice.
"You two have fun." Harper winked not-so-subtly.
Kelsey rolled her eyes and Zach's face reddened. "Thanks, Harper," she exasperatedly and sarcastically shared her gratitude.
For the entire afternoon, every chance they got, Harper and Mason - mostly Harper - would playfully tease either one of them ever since the bomb was dropped at lunch that day. It was what friends did, and while August, Phoebe, and Autumn quietly shared their support, the two louder ones of the group did everything they could to make the situation more fun.
