THE SOFT RUMBLING of the silver vehicle's engine dying down did almost nothing to break Zach's light slumber. He was not always one to take naps during the light of day while the sun was still overhead, but this situation was different. Over three hours in a car would do that to a person depending on their level of exhaustion due to never ending schoolwork.
Unlike the miniscule girl in the back seat of the vehicle, Zach was sound asleep. He found himself more tired than usual since he had been so worked up over school, his classes, but most of all, his ophthalmologist appointment. Zach knew he had nothing to lose if it did not end up working out for him, but he felt bad for possibly wasting time.
A couple of gentle taps on his shoulder was enough for Zach to open his eyes, which unfortunately made no difference to his outside world. At first, he was quite disoriented, momentarily forgetting where exactly he was except for the fact he was in a vehicle. Mrs. West seemed to notice and decided to explain the situation to him.
"Zach, Honey, we just got to the eye doctor," she softly notified him of their location. "You fell asleep for the whole time.
The teenager quietly yawned and rubbed his tired eyelids out of habit. "I fell asleep?" he mumbled while waking himself up entirely.
Hayleigh was already giggling from the back seat. "Yes, you did! I thought I'd be the sleepy one, but apparently that's more of an old person thing!"
"Be careful who you say that around," Mrs. West teased her daughter. "Grumpy people in their forties might not be too happy with calling your brother, who isn't even an adult yet, an old man."
"But he acts like one!"
Mrs. West laughed as she opened her car door. "Tell that to your father."
Hayleigh giggled and Zach rolled his eyes amusedly as the two of them got out of the silver vehicle along with their mother. The latter felt a tiny hand grab onto his own in order to show him where exactly to go. Zach was completely lost otherwise, so he let his younger sister guide him to exactly where he needed to go.
Mrs. West was careful as she led her two children across the parking lot and onto the sidewalk in front of the ophthalmologist office. The building in Raleigh was quite busy, seeing as it was near the downtown area. Cities were very loud and overwhelming places for Zach. He was grateful he did not live in one in both Michigan and North Carolina. The suburbs were much more comforting
Zach listened to the bustling sounds around him—from the speeding car on the nearby highway to the person speaking loudly on the phone across the way of the parking lot. The world around him was overwhelming for the unseeing teenager. It was even crazier than school was for him, which was a lot to say the least.
